Weekend Update 3/19/23

Thanks Guys.  Otto,  It's not much more involved than I described.  I used an airbrush to apply Vallejo black wash to the entire model.  I then worked it around with a brush.  I decided it was on a little thick so I spritzed the whole thing with water and let it run off.  After it was dry I oversprayed it with Krylon matte.  I then applied a very dilute mix of Vallejo Light Brown (Tan) again with the airbrush.  They same was done with Burnt Umber and then toned down with very dilute Panzer Gray.  The great part about this process is you don't have to be careful.  It is actually desirable to miss spots and not cover well so the different layers show through.  Even the raw styrene.  I should mention that I sanded every piece of styrene used to give it a bit of wood grain.  I still plan to do a little rust colored wash around the NBWs and dry brushing here and there to bring out highlights.

All hail the queen, the Madame Queen that is. she is designed to slide onto the oversized concor 2-10-2 mech as theyre right at the proper 69" driver diameter and the wheelbase is close.
Got the turtle back tender done but it needs a little work on the frame/body clearance as its a tad too tight of a fit.

This week ten passenger cars had some windows filled in. One is a Kato Pullman super dome which will replace a resin model on my BC Rail Pacific Starlight Dinner train, the other super dome will be VIA Rail, and the Rapido daynighters and Athabasca Shops generator car kitbash will be for the new version of the Rocky Mountaineer.



After which two cycles of priming and then filling and priming again resulted in a place where I feel like I can move on to paint.







The prototypes also show a little bit of evidence that windows had been filled as well.





And just now I soldered guard rails onto the Arbutus Canyon bridge.



It’s now ready for a bath and more paint.

Thank you very much for taking us through that and describing the colours. I’ve been trying to figure out a method to weather the ties on the Arbutus Canyon bridge and your system of washes and colours sounds like it will achieve what I’m looking for.

Cool, although I have rudimentry versions of the 2-10-4's but a 3D printed shell will be far more accurate than I can produce. The 4-8-4 3759 I take it will be using a Kato FEF 3 mechanism?

I finally started using the Photon Mono 4K that I purchased last year. The first print I'm willing to share is this Conrail H1K stone car. Supports were automatically generated by the new Photon Workshop 3.0.1. I learned a lot about over supporting a model and how fine details actually print.

hegstad1--your coaling dock is truly impressive, particularly the way you have managed to make the styrene look like wood (to my eyes, at least)

Craig--the bridge is looking great, the Pacific Starlight will look great crossing (a hockey mask Budd car, even better! )

This weekend the new Lake Cowichan section achieved operational completion.  Yesterday my friend Tim (BCR 570) took time out of a busy day to help with the installation of the last three switch machines.  This is a job that goes better with an extra pair of hands and eyes.  This was what the underside of Lake Cowichan looked like when we were done:


Then it was time to flip it over and install it on the layout.  Between this photo and the previous one there was almost a full day's worth of adjusting servo travel and (in one case) replacing an actuating wire that had been cut too short.  I ran this train over all the trackage to test everything.  You can see the cut-out in the benchwork frame to accommodate one of the switch machines.


Finally, I ran the trains up to Lake Cowichan that would run in a normal operating session.  It was fun to run something again!  Two CN boxcars are spotted at the BCFP Youbou mill, a Railbox car sits at the Lake Cowichan mill, a CP covered hopper sits in the Lake Cowichan yard ("selectively compressed" to a single siding), and on the opposite side of the main track is a string of log flats.  There was a lot more trackage than this at Lake Cowichan, but the tracks that are modeled now follow the correct schematic, and CN and E&N operations are now separated, as on the prototype.

I love the progress you are making. It’s cool to see pretty much to only other modeller I’ve ever seen model Lake Cowichan. Honestly it’s begging to be modelled. Over its life span it saw a ton of traffic of many varieties, for such a small town.

I've found the "round tuit" for a pair of M&R sides I've had for years. I need to find (or make, which might prove easier) a "Railway Express Agency, Inc." decal that is about 6 scale inches smaller than the Microscale one that overhangs the mounting board (as close as my caliper can measure, the M&R board is the correct size according to drawings in the Head End Car book).  Hopefully will have it finished by next weekend.

Bryan:  Hadn't thought of that.  Closer packing would be a good reason for cutting the sides.

Peteski:  Wooden cable reels/spools with wood covering like that were very common in the Northwest 50+ years ago.  We lived near an electric supply/contractor, and could get them for use as outdoor tables.  Never tried to bring one inside, like Jesse6669's friend did.
Most had a groove around the inside of each side where the wooden cover boards fit.  They were jammed in at the factory, and usually broken to get them out, leaving a pile of scrap lumber behind the shop.  The spools could be sent back to the factory, but occasionally one would be damaged, or worn, enough they'd discard it.

But you're right, it's been a long time since I've seen a covered reel.  Here in eastern Kentucky, wooden reels seem very unusual.  Most of the ones we see on trucks are metal, or plastic for the smaller ones.  If they're covered with anything it's plastic sheet.

Made a start on a new 8ft x 9ft apartment layout based on the British Columbia Railway's most remote and obscure division point... Beatton River.   Just laying out the L-girder sections on the floor to visualize the view angles at this stage..   

Lots of lessons learned from earlier layouts and this one will be very much focused on high scenery to track ratio and railfanning rather than more traditional operations.   Mid 1970s BCR will be the focus as Beatton River was the site of meets where trains from Chetwynd and Fort Nelson would exchange tonnage.
