I like this one. Well... most of it. I like the way he raised the plate for the ACI. For an N Scale piece of work - the rust is extremely nice. Not creamy. The Pennsylvania is almost too obliterated though. The trucks are average - but the shiny Atlas wheels are killing me here. Weak points: the painted patches would've been better done as decals. In N Scale, the painted shapes are too thick. Additionally - the film behind the reporting marks is too distracting. The wash on the underside is a good touch - but it kind of puddled up (like on the crossmember).

Funny, you actually picked out what I felt were my personal downfalls with this car. I waited until the end of the month, as I always do, and was so eager to get started with the actual weathering after painting and decaling that I forgot to dullcote the car after decals, and the film was evident. I should have cleaned it off and dullcoted so I could start over, but decided not to. I also should have airbrushed the patches instead of brush-painting them. And I was paying so much attention to the body of the car that I almost totally neglected the underframe/trucks/couplers.

my vote is for that gonzgocrfan, or whatever he calls himself. i think everyone did a great job replicating this car, but i have seen sean's other work in my hands, and he is getting better everytime he creates a new menu of corrosion. his custom painting is flawless. i like the rusty aei tag and the patching. that's how the early cr did it. simple and cheap! next i think kluke hit it on the spot, followed by sw1000b. i think this forum has the most talent regardless!! it's always interesting to see new ideas and creativity in all scales.

The decal work is great. Yes, that matters. You guys are trying to replicate a real car here. Rust is subtle. Like Butch, Steve obscured the original Pennsylvania and herald too much. That's an important part of this car. Weak point: I didn't like the cat-scratchy charcoal-looking weathering. It is not on the prototype. Steve also did the wrong side of the car.

I'm not happy with the cat-scratch looking weathering neither and the Pennsylvania was ok till I put some more dark and rusty washes on but then it was too late - bugger ! for a next time I know that I don't have to obscure it that much - hey it's not my #141 car, it's my #5 ! show us your #5 car please !!

That's just it. I would never in a million years have done that car. I hate Pennsy and Conrail.   >

ok Softly-Mike, it's one thing to zing other peoples work, in an more or less arrogant way or not but just to sit on a very high horse and not to give away some hints to help other people to do their work better next time it's not the meaning of the whole weathering challenge (the one with the cat-scratchy is not a hint...  ). you know, Pillowy-Mike, for a next time I don't need your brushes anymore, what does it helps me if I hear from you what I already know what's wrong with my work ? if you can't give me any help to do things better next time just don't bother to criticize my work, better spend your time on work like this 6039781364 which is by the way another "work of art" in my opinion and worth to be mentioned here (I know you don't like it when I mention your work here but so what...?  ). one thing I am curious about, would people on eBay really pay that much for your work if they would know how the artist behave ?  ;D
someday my work will kick a$$, with or without your help (I just need more time to find the right way to weather w/o your help) but hey, in the end of the day it's your decision to give away some hints or not (or it's your decision how you behave in a public forum...) happy weathering...  ;D

"euro trash" is NOT a good nickname, neither are any of those that Steve used. In general, nicknames are ok, and a little gentle ribbing is fun, we all do it, but generally it's with people who we interact with frequently and consider friends. A nickname by someone you don't know can easily be seen as an insult.

I don't know how that could be any more obvious.

Anyway, If you two would like to duke it out further, take it to email, feel free to take it to email, open up, guns blazing, I don't care, but I don't want to see it here.
Personal attacks are NOT ok. Not in challenge voting, not in the weathering forum, not on the Railwire. Period.

We're trying to do something constructive here. But if someone isn't interested in that, and is more interested in stirring up trouble (at a regular, almost monthly, interval, it would seem), I am NOT going to hesitate to show that person the door. Everyone did a really great job on this car. Congrats to you all. My vote came down to Butch and Jeff. It was really close, but since I had to vote for one, I went with Butch's. I liked Jeff's patches a little better but his car didn't seem as worn and tired as the proto, and Butch's had this look the best for me. Again, great job to everyone. ;D

Something of interest I noticed this month, when did this change from February 2, 2006:

I like the idea of not being able to see the current tally of votes. That eliminates people doing tie-breaker or pity votes.

However - we should not divulge WHO we are voting for along with our critiques. Like how I did it, for example. Otherwise, readers can go through the posts and get a good guess who is ahead - or behind.

Mellow-Mike, I respect your detailed analysis a great deal. I do not need to pad your ego in regards to your model railroading skill, that has been done to death. Depending how much or how little you rip each monthly challenge entry a new A$$hole probably does at least some small swaying in voting, even without seeing who happens to be ahead in the voting. I guess I can gain solice in knowing your one vote counts the same as mine  :-*

I generally stay quiet about these challenges, but I really liked the weathering of these cars. Donkey and Sean got my top picks.

Off topic:
$760 is moronic for that car. Its a two evening deal. While I may not weather all that well, I can tell you what value is. I rather make three payments on my Focus, thank you.
