I've made some more progress, so here's a new photo. I removed the hand brake from the nose so I can reuse it on the other side on the long hood, and I have shortened the sills as needed. Not really happy with my measuring  >:( so I need to do a good job with the filler.

It's looking good Sir Tainly, what did you use to start with? Did you change the wheel setup on the trucks yet, can't see in the picture real good. The reason I ask is that I was going to build one from scratch but if you had an easier way I would try that.

SDLs are such odd birds, I can't wait to see it when it's done.

Ken,

It's a GP38 shell with a section removed (3 doors worth). The chasssis is an RS1 from Atlas as it doesn't have those bumps on the side like the RS3 one. The trucks are still as bought at the moment, and are RSD5 ones. This gives you the offset centre wheel as required, but obviously the sidefrmaes are wrong. To fix that I have some SD35 one that I'm modifying and will sand then thin and glue them on the outsides to the RSD trucks which will have been sanded flat. If you have the copy of MR where they make an HO version, then you can see what I'm attempting to copy. The plans from an earlier edition of MR can be downloaded from the MR website, although there are some mistakes on them (like showing a a handbrake on the nose). The winterization hatch is from an SD60, and the fuel tank is from an SD35, but it has been shortened while leaving the airtanks intact.


Ed, thanks. That's the reason I'm building one, not because I need it, but because it's novel and not many folks have one (since you can't get the Jim's shell now).

ok so the brake is now in the right place, the gaps in the frame and hood have been filled (might need to be done again) and the rear porch is now extended back under the long hood.

Sorry for the over exposed photo but we now have handrails on both sides. I need to sort the back out still and make the shell sit at the correct height. The back is dragging on the rails. Next week time to fix the trucks and start adding details. Hopefully she'll be all decodered up and painted/decalled during my week off in 3 weeks time :)

Ok well tonights progress is a little mixed..I did the front truck as shown below, but I'm not completely happy with it. I think though I may have to live with it for now, and perhaps revisit it when my skills improve.

Since taking the shot I've rerailed the truck ;) (no it doesn't slope down at the back), cleaned the rough places up a little and sadly had to remove the brake line. I found that while the line was clear when the truck moved, if it tilted as a result of a lumpy track work, it would foul horribly and would have probably derailled the loco.

Ken they are hand made using thin wire and GMM stanchions.

It's half painted, the maroon is done, now I need to add the black. We've had awful weather for the last few weeks, rain almost everyday at some point and so the air has just been too damp to paint anything.

ah sorry missed your other post, I painted the unit maroon and stopped there..I haven't touched it since. Been a busy summer for me, maybe I'll get time this winter :)
