I need to do this with some MILW rd units, and I was thinking of using a pencil eraser to lightly remove the top layer of paint.  Maybe alcohol would work too?

Jeff, looks like a nice project! I would probably lightly airbrush in the blue areas directly over the factory paint, then use a pencil eraser as Tom suggested to feather it out. Alcohol will probably leave too many blotches of crazed paint.

If you don't want to do a lot of detailing, you can at least add signature features like plow and sunshades. The model doesn't seem to need much of anything else - looks like it even has sand lines on the trucks!?

Hey Guys!

I am new to this forum, refered here by Jeff(mrKluke). I just have to wonder what railroads use for paint,water soluable? Even where I live in the midwest(WI) where the counties seem to praise salt on the roads, You don't even see cars that were repainted and then lost the paint down to the original.
Jeff this is going to be a great project for you, I know you'll pull it off!

Jeff-just to let u know-being a Arizona Cardinal fan since I was 9 (& when they were in St.Louis too!) yeah I know, I'm in Ohio-a bud in 3rd grade got me going on them-but since the "Cards" make the playoffs so rarely, when they do, USA Today puts out a special sports edition! (Just Kidding!)
Don't know who you're rooting for, but myself I'm indifferent (don't mind anyone except Denver though) but tonite, was out with my "other half" at our hangout (I'm her designated driver-& coffee & coke is my beverage of choice) the band that was playing was from Pittsburgh, & you guessed it, "Terrible Towels" were waved frequently, at least 3 were were wearing Rothlisberger (sp?) shirts (a couple locals lol) much to the consternation of the owner of the bar, who is a die-hard Browns fan!
I'm thinking I read once u were a St. Louis Rams fan, & that town was dying for a team when "my" team moved west! No worries-they brought them a Super Bowl victory-more than I can say for my team, which hasn't won a championship since 1947!  :-\
Oh well-hope your car is coming along well for the "other" challenge-trying to put some final details & finishing touches on mine-& if all goes well, it should be "ready" (well somewhat!)

Railwire coil car. After those two cars are done, I'll give you some info on these engines.  :

Evening Jeff,

 I don't think that I have ever tried painting an engine with the handrails on, but I can't remember, I think I'm getting old! I have taken the handrails off one of the proto 2000 engines that I have. I took a # 11 exacto blade and slipped it under the stanchion and worked it up carfully. I don't want to tell you to go ahead and do it but if it was me I would do it again, it was just time consuming and a little hard on the brain cells but it was worth it in the end. It makes it a whole lot easier to paint the model and do what you are going to do with the paint. Another thing you might want to think about Jeff is when you are doing all this work how many times you might bump or lean your hand on the handrails and hope not but might accidently break something.
