Atlas In-Transit 8/14/24

Got an email from Atlas that the following are in transit for arrival week of August 21, 2024:
U23B locomotive
B23-7 locomotive
25,500 gal tank car
USRA rebuilt steel box cars

I ordered the Chessie U23B some time ago, looking for anything C&O when I first got into the hobby, and before I fully understood the preordering. Announced in 2019, it had since fallen off the production schedule (TBA instead of any estimate), so its arrival is a welcome surprise.

Dammit. I want a sound equipped B23-7 and U23b and I just dropped [CENSORED] on some SD40-2s, lol.

Altoona's gonna be expensive.

Does that mean in transit to dealers or in transit on the ocean to Atlas?

In transit to the Atlas warehouse, expected arrival in NJ next week.

As was mentioned in a different but similar thread, apparently this is a partial shipment of the locomotives, Silver series only.

DC for the win!

I'd rather they take the time to get the silver stuff right, so no complaints here, especially if it helps keep their cash flow flowing.

I pre-ordered GP-20’s from Atlas back in 2018. They are finally getting a “partial” shipment today, supposedly. Six years to wait seems to be a little excessive.

According to the Atlas Master Schedule, they arrived at the Atlas warehouse today (8/15/24), so I'm guessing they will start appearing in stores in the next 2 weeks.

Just received an email from Hogtrainz asking if I still wanted the 3 GP-20’s I reserved.

Decisions, decisions. 🤔

i have an email to my supplier, dated Dec 7, 2018 for two undec w/sound.  I last checked with him in 2021 to see if I was still on his list - I was. It will be interesting to see if I get anything.  I don't really need them now.  The intent was to use the chassis as the mech for an ALCo RS36 and to make my own shells, but then I got shells from Briggs  (in 2021) and those are geared towards the Atlas RS11.

As for the wait, yeah, it's a long time.  The locos were apparently delivered originally in April 2022, but there were problems with some of the locos and Atlas returned most.  I've heard there have been other deliveries which were also sent back, resulting in this 6 year wait.  Unfortunate, but at least Atlas had the strength to send them back if they weren't acceptable.  Since it was the silver ones that were kept it makes me wonder if there were issues with the sound decoder installation.

Just received an email from Hogtrainz asking if I still wanted the 3 GP-20’s I reserved.

Waiting to hear from HOGtrainZ about the PRR FA-1's I ordered that should be in the same shipment.  Between them and the GP20's it could get expensive (though not ST SD40-2 expensive! )

The SD45s were shipped in 1969.

Would anyone happen to have insights as to the mechanism on these new locomotives, particularly the U23B?

Do you think we can we expect the "new" mechanism with the solid frame, wired trucks, speaker (even DC-only), and E24 connector? (Like we've seen on the newest GP7, SD9, etc)

Or since they were announced in 2019, is it more likely to have the previous split frame that was available when the locomotive was originally designed?

Was just contemplating the pros and cons. The new E24 connectors are easy, but my new GP7 can only handle about a dozen cars by itself.

I guess we'll find out soon enough.

If we're being technical, the first were built in late 1965 and delivered in 1966.   ;)
