My Atlas/Rivarossi 0-4-0 with Max's motor upgrade.  It was the second N-Scale loco I ever got after the Aurora F9 in the Postage Stamp set.

 My Kato BNSF mid-production SD40-2. It's the modern geep. It can work the yard, run a local or road freight. The model it's self is quality engineered, nothing glued, everything interlocks on the shell. Drive train is made with quality durable parts that should last until the Earth rights it's self and the ice melts so I can go back and dig through the ruins and find my Kato Unitrack and a power pack that I can run off solar, wind power, or a leftover battery pack from a Toyota Prius hybrid and a stepdown generator.

Hey Ralph,  good to know that I'm not the only one who truly appreciates Kato-designed and manufactured models and sees how much ahead of the pack their engineering is.  While not the best detailed compared to lots of other models today, no other manufacturer comes even close to Kato's engineering. Well, Tomix comes close.

Yes, Kato sometimes jumps the proverbial shark, and has some missteps, but averaging the good and bad, they still rock my world.

Probably my "modernized" Arnold-Rapido FA.  That was my first true N scale locomotive, so it might as well be my last.  It runs as well as most of the new ones, and will probably outlast them.

That remains my all time most difficult and yet best-running scratchbuild.

The smart thing would be to grab the storage case they're all in, but if I have to open it up and pull one out, it'll be my Minitrix H-12-44. I put a lot of blood, sweat, and tears into converting it from a quaint throwback into a useable modern switcher.

to stay with the spirit of this thread, I chose one loco. In reality, I would be crushed by the ice trying to grab more.

WM J-1 1409. This was my first serious kitbash/scratch build and my first real WM steam. It made me realize that modeling the WM in the steam era was possible. I have other locos that pull, run, and look better, but this one took ten years! My WM K2 pacific is getting close and it's going to be a looker! My have to change my answer in a few weeks!

My N-Scale GP28 kitbashed from a GP35 and GP38. it has ESU sound and runs purrfectly.
