53 of the Barrel Ore Cars?!?! Holy crap man! you got a far bigger train budget than I!!

Looks great though!

I've been wanting the ore train for a long time. It's such a unique train that I promised myself I'd do it justice if if ever came to n scale, and it did, so here I am, lol. Though I never saw it run, I do recall seeing the barrel cars stored in the reclamation area of Mac Yard (just north of Toronto). It doesn't hurt that the area I'm modeling (not doing a particular line) is southern Ontario, where part of the prototypes run was (Toronto to Hamilton leg), and my era is 1987-89, right at the end of it's operation (ended 1990 iirc).

Not going to lie, the delivery of the ore cars is what kicked me in the butt and start construction in earnest... the eight 2x4 modules I built last year have helped this speed along.

Yeah, now you need to do the train justice with a big layout!

Wow, lock4244 - 53 barrel ore cars!  Quite the expenditure … the Canadian economy thanks you profusely!  Great looking result - impressive ore train.

Finished a batch of eight 3D printed hopper cars.  Used a leftover mix of Tichy and K4 decals.

Nice to see some vintage CN modelling!

For increased depth of field you can try a macro lens which stops down to f32 if the usual f22 doesn’t do it for you.

I created and posted the STL file here:

These are pretty basic PLA prints made with an ancient Ender 3.  Seems to work well for a basic car on a long train.

PM if you have questions.

I guess late 80's is considered vintage now, isn't it? Seems like yesterday.....

Thanks Tim. All my lenses are 1980's vintage manual lenses, and in with all priority was given to fast glass with low F stops (2, 1.8, 1.4). They work well with DSLR's but I have nothing in the 24-50mm lens range with anything over F16. Was thinking a marco, but the cost is a little bit much at the moment... still need to purchase a DCC set up and boards for all my locomotives  :scared:

For most scenes f16 should yield acceptable depth of field.  But extremely close macro shots will still have fairly shallow depth of field, even at f32.  That's when you need to get into focus stacking. The depth of field range is also wider the wider the angle of the lens is.  It is all connected.  In this instance you are not going for the fastest shutter speed (fast glass wide open lens) but for dept of field (using aperture priority mode and, sometimes even a tripod because shutter speed will be slow at high f-stops).

https://shotkit.com/f-stop-chart/

Older lenses (like my old Nikon 35mm lenses) have a  depth of field scale right on the lens (the curved colored lines).

First print of the roof over the south part of the building partially failed while printing. The second one ….

… (above) came out fine. Next step is to print a new roof for the green chain shed that now goes in higher and intersects the roof shown above where the 'V' is.

I have two projects in flight at the moment.

First, working on the abandoned mill for Dawson Springs.

And second, adding missing ties into Windsor St so I can start ballasting.

Did this and that. Tried a couple of flats with TSC couplers. The experiment failed... I may have to go back and weld the couplers so they stay coupled. I have an idea for an updated coupler box as well but not sure if it'll help any.

Beyond that, continuing to work on the 100 flat project, which includes now GSH90A equipped for wind turbine blades (everything simply placed... prime/paint/etc. later this month) as well as some pressure vessel loads:

and, finally, the car I have been looking for: in this case, one of the early NSH90 with nailable decks retrofitted with bunks. The last of the models, next up is figuring out instructions and uploading them so that the various models will be available for purchase. Present idea is to group the cars by type, e.g., PTTX cars, LTTX cars, etc.

More work on Pine Lumber. Tissue paper was used for the tarp and working on part one of the Royal palm trees, more weathering and lumber to come.
