Well this is frustrating - It looks like every number they chose was repainted by 1998. So I have to pass on all of them.

Oof!

I didn't realize you were doing such a late date. I thought you were doing 95 or so.

My big problem is figuring out what to do with my Intermountain ones.

You were supposed to sell them once you saw an ST one in person!

I did that, thinking they would be pretty quick to do late 80's early 90's UP (and maybe an MP Canary) but it seems UP, MKT and MP are at the bottom of the pile. Clearly someone at ST is an N&W/Sou/NS fan given they amount of high hood GP30's and SD40-2's they have done in HO and SD40-2's in N.

I'm happy for them, but UP SD40-2's with gray trucks and MKT SD40-2's got EVERYWHERE in the 80's and 90's...

Same thing you did with the Kato kitbash?
I'm in the same boat. Even if I reserve a few (I will), I now have to paint the damn walkways on the IM units to match.

That's not the ONLY thing you have to do to them.

That said, they do look pretty good once you've put the work in.

My Kato has a special place in my heart, so it'll live on, but can't ever appear alongside the new kids.

Oh, I'm not about to strip and repaint the ScaleTrains engines, they are far too fragile for that.

We can never have too many SD40-2s.  Especially in your era.

I can't tell the difference between the Santa Fe repaint and as-delivered.  Anybody?

This... but Santa Fe.
Post 85 rebuilds are almost non existent, or there is always something off like road numbers or incorrect headlight placement, antenna stands, AC units... I could go on...
then there's these guys... only the Snoot? really? that damn thing is so ugly.

also I'd like to mention, I don't mind adding details like AC units or antenna stands.... but moving headlights to the nose is not an easy task especially on $200 locomotives...

Looks like as far as the 40-2s go, thank you Kato. even if they are all lettered for MKM...

I can't really some of the descriptions on the As Delivered say Post 1980 details... worst part is the 1980s almost everything got rebuilt/ upgraded on the ATSF... so without buying both versions I wont really know till i buy them. which I dont want to, they are the Snoots and I just want to pretend those ugly bass turds (  ) didn't exist.

I'll just sit here and wait till we get some 40s with low mounted brake cylinders too.

The blue side sill is the as built paint scheme.  Another as built spotting feature is the road numbers slightly spread and sitting directly on top of the battery box doors.  I saw three as built road numbers available for preorder, and that is what I plan on getting.  Perhaps a fourth to renumber.  The white frame stripe started to appear around 1989/90 IIRC. You will also note the white frame units have anti reflective paint on the nose.  This also coincided with the number boards switching from white on black to black on white.  I hope this helps.

I'm sure those worried about road numbers can get what they want in a subsequent release.  Scale Trains churns out releases if the GEVO T4 are any indication.

Okay so looking again I see two differences in the artwork between the Santa Fe versions.
The repaint version has:
- lower large 'Santa Fe'
- exhaust area on the roof painted grey

No apparent physical differences.  Both high headlight.
