Time for my annual posting of the Christmas windows at Marshall Field's State Street store in Chicago.  My parents took me to see them as a child, I took my sons and now we take our grandchildren.

As they say in Chicago, "Meet me under the clock."

MERRY CHRISTMAS!

Very cool.  I am reminded of the famous animated displays which used to grace the windows of the former Woodward's department store in downtown Vancouver . . . .

So what did you do to it, Mike? My N scale Athearn Challengers can't pull much...
Thanks, Otto K.

One method would be to pull it downgrade . One could enhance that with a section of track with all the trees and vertical things leaning at the same forward angle in the direction of train travel . Too much would change in image from wow to funny to silly , all the while the train was really easing down hill .

Progress on the offset plow.

With the body as true as I can make it, I hit it with some Tamiya Chrome Yellow. Coverage isn't as good as I would like, but that can be fixed when weathered.

Trucks are from Athearn. Bolsters were shaved down to get the right height. The front truck detail was sanded off to make it skinny enough to fit under the blade. Grabs are BLMA and 1/100 bronze.

Atlas/Walthers plow for comparison.

I also located a photo of the plow numbers used on the Boston line:

There's a shyness found in reason
Apprehensive influence swallow away
You seem to feel abysmal take it
Then you're careful grace for sure
Kinda like the way you're breathing
Kinda like the way you keep looking away

Here's few of the cars I'm working on with the Tamiya Panel Line Accent.  Not only using it to highlight seams, door hardware etc, but also using it with a dry brush to simulate streaking.  Run the Tamiya across the top of the car, then use your brush to drag straight down.

Roger-
Thanks for the memories!!
Fields had a great train department.....Lionel, American Flyer, Marx, Marklin, Fleischman, and other HO brands.   Another gem was the Vaughn Seed Company on Randolph Street that had a really good train section and a specialization in West German toys like Schucco.  There were also at least three full model train hobby shopsin the Loop....the fabled All Nations, Downtown Hobbies, and the Fair.
Now all have been squeezed out by Starbucks and Cinnabon on every other corner.  Bah humbug on Macy's!!!
Merry Christmas to All!

I'm making progress on my 3D printed N scale D&RGW "Fowler Clone" single sheathed boxcar.  The couple of molded on under body details were pretty crude and oversized, so I cut them off and scratch built my own out of styrene.  The air reservoir, cylinder, and triple valve I made are by no means accurate representations, but decent approximations of the real thing, especially for underside details on an N scale car.  I have the coming week off, so should be able to finish the rest of the under body details.

Also, a tiny detail hack - the yellowish strips on the air reservoir and cylinder are masking tape cut into very thin strips.  You can use these to make thin raised lines.  The glue on the tape will stick to the surface.  You can position the strips with tweezers.  Then use extra thin super glue applied with a small diameter wire to attach permanently and harden the tape.

Old details:

Happy Christmas to all.

Tim--that track section looks even better with the grass tufts added--outstanding work (and this is something that's going inside your wall!).

Craig--those levelling gizmos are ingenious!

I've moved topside with my Lake Cowichan project--the first three turnouts are installed, as is the track along the back.  This is a connection to the CN's Cowichan sub--not strictly prototypical, but based on a late 1970s proposal that unfortunately never came to pass, and which gives more flexibility and variety to my ops scenario.

I'm not as far along as I'd hoped to be at this point, but not far off, especially considering that the power went out four times last week, and most of today (after church) has been given over to the consumption of vast amounts of very good BC wine.

@Dayliner thank you.

Tim, he’ll just give you the same good BC wine and those tangents will be nice and straight again.

If you're working on the railroad, remember Rule G!

(I assume Canadian roads had a similar rule)
