I'll lead off on a work in progress.  Every once in a while I'll do paint work for other people.  A friend had 4 SD35's he wanted done, 1 just putting a number on one and painting the 3 others from undecs.  Here's the first one with most of the important players in place.







I have a WM R/W/B that is getting a number added, 2 Fireballs and a Speed to do.  The running idea with the Fireball scheme is they ordered 2 early on, and numbered 7430/7431.  5 more were ordered later on, giving you 7432-7436

I also snagged these from @cbroughton67 as a Christmas present to myself

Trying out Roberts Brick Mortar on a test piece before going hog wild on my kit bashes. It was quite easy to use and the effect is pretty good. Well, I'm off till the New Year. Everyone have a safe and joyous holiday.

I decided to get away from layout work and try out my new Tamiya panel liners on a transformer load and depressed flat. It'll take a bit of practice, the liners are not as subtle as I had hoped, and removing the fluid pulls it out of the crevices where it ought to stay. It also doesn't dry dead flat as I would like. Or maybe I didn't shake the bottles enough...

Working on an icing platform

I too recently picked up panel liner.   Definitely has its place, and is hit or miss.  Black does what it should.  I also have orange/brown, dark brown, and gray.  I haven't had that ah ha moment with them yet.

One can certainly see how the painting leading off this weekend's WUD could fire a young lad's imagination.  For those of us growing up in the UK it was Triang Hornby and the amazing paintings of Terence Cuneo which graced the annual catalogue covers.

More progress on the small section of layout to go inside the wall; after creating and tinting the plaster scenery it was time to add some ground cover:




It was then time for me to learn how to apply ballast, starting with a test piece before moving on to this section:




This was followed with some final pastel weathering of the ballast before adding vegetation:








I also installed body mount couplers, new trucks and wheels on some recently acquired cylindrical hoppers:




and installed new wheels on six new Prairie Shadows cylindrical hoppers:

Train show at the Washington state history museum in Tacoma WA the last week or so. I got to work more bugs out of my challenger. 2+ hours with 50 boxcars and a caboose, is far more respectful that where it started.

I brought my modules down from the garage and found it was difficult to align them since the big canyon modules are heavy and I can only access them from the front…. And I only have two arms.

So I came up with this leveling thing that I screwed onto the ends of the heavier modules. First I get them level with shims, then all I have I do is insert the smaller, lighter connector modules, adjust the screws and shazam, tracks aligned at each end in minutes. Then I can bolt them together.

It has been a rough 6 months trying to get my 12'x17' layout converted to DCC.
I could not have done it without of lot of help from Erik Seidelmann and the other folks in the New Jersey Southern model railroad club.
Was finally able to get enough trains running for a Christmas video.

Time for my annual posting of the Christmas windows at Marshall Field's State Street store in Chicago.  My parents took me to see them as a child, I took my sons and now we take our grandchildren.

As they say in Chicago, "Meet me under the clock."

We’ve come up with a track plan for my daughter Aly’s O scale three-rail layout.  Right now it’s Thomas versus the Super Chief, because the Polar Express is under the Christmas tree.  A nice thing is that we have enough track, so that we have the loop for under the tree each year without having to dig into this layout’s track pieces.



A big thanks to Nicholas Smith Trains and FedEx for the two turnouts and Super Chief dome car on our doorstep this morning less than twenty hours from order placement.  Wow, and on Christmas Eve!

We hope to purchase the materials and begin building the table during Winter Break around the holidays and visiting family.
