The 'custom' decals should be easy enough though...

The roof on the model is too flat as well.  I took a pretty hefty file to mine and put a little more curve on it.
I think the real disappointing aspect is the windows are really small comparatively.

A good opportunity for Ed to design a replacement cab :)

Before Bachmann cleaned me out, I did a resin 70-tonner kit that was either over the Kato 11-105 chassis, or on my own (shown) that I put over the Bachmann 44-tonner chassis.   The cab is a separate piece.   It has the 70-tonner end doors on the back, but if you wanted mirror surgery on two cabs to put the front in the back as well (which works with resin) it's an alternative.   I stilll have all the molds.   I still think my resin cab is a whole lot closer to the GE cab than the Bachmann.

But when is someone going to do the phase 1 hoods for the 44 tonner?

Ooh. So the existence of those has just given me the courage to hack up my cab and try and "fix it". Knowing that I've got a viable backup if I blow it up makes that possible.

So don't lose those molds yet ;)

IMO, to truly fix the cab it would have to have thinner walls.  Photoetched brass would work nicely.  Doing things like filing the existing windows larger and maybe using Microscale Krystal Klear would IMO not do it.  3D print might work if the walls are thin enough.

I actually learned photoetching on that 70-tonner project for the steps, handrails, etc. and gave it completely up as the messiest, most expensive, hazardous, and least efficient use of my time I've discovered yet.   Crossed it off my bucket list of skills, like putting on a house roof, I'll never do that again.  Sold all my equipment.

My photoetch service is excellent, but running around $550 a sheet, that's an expensive cab.   I have another project underway that economically works out, but not this one.

And a photoetch cab would still have the problems of roof edges...somewhere, rather than the smooth all-around curve of a GE cab that should be there.

I'm molding something now just about every evening.   I've done Shapeways successfully, but it's not a workable business plan and their marketplace search is just totally and completely worthless.   My middle son has really mastered 3D printing, but by the time he gets one 'perfect' I could have scratchbuilt a master and made it in resin about six times over.

The windows on that 70-tonner cab are .010 x .020 strip master.  And unlike FUD, this stuff doesn't shatter like glass if you sneeze on it.

Shortline CAD, a vendor on Facebook, did a 3d print in N scale of a 80T GE body to fit on the Bachmann 40T chassis. The cab was much better than Bachmann's.  Problem is, Shoretline CAD is not printing anymore.

I just looked up Shortline CAD and I think that 80T is HO scale.

Rand,
You might want to reevaluate your opinions.  PPD Ltd. in Scotland does photoetchign quite affordably (several members here hve used them). As for Shapeways and FUD< that is old school stuff.  The current hobby-grade SLA printers (like Photon) and many kinds of resin they have available will run circles around FUD (and you can print at home).  There are plenty of examples of those prints on this forum.
