I’ve been working more on the Ontario Northland Polar Bear express lately. I managed to acquire a very rare factory painted ONR GP38-2 in a round about kind of way. I had a loco that I had planned to repaint, but after the saga of painting the FP7 I opted to try to find one of the factory painted models. I put a post in a Facebook buy and sell group asking if anyone wanted to trade shells or sell a loco. No takers…. But one fellow suggested I contact Atlas to see if they had any painted shells hanging around. Wouldn’t you know it they did!



And so with a simple shell swap the power is complete…. And I was able to sell the CP shell for almost what I paid for the ONR shell. Check mark in the win column!



I did decals on the baggage car and cafe/lounge. I also added the modified doors seen on the prototype baggage car.





And finally I got started on the last car of the train… a very awkward 40ft box car. It has a door only on one side, and had previously been strengthened and fitted with 8.5 foot doors. I’ve been waiting a long time to do this car as 40 ft box cars with an 8.5 foot Youngstown door are hard to find, and this is a bit of a taller door so the parts in the market don’t work. Well I was rummaging in the parts bin looking for something else and found some left over doors from a Kaslo 50ft NSC box car. Well what are the odds, it’s an 8.5ft Youngstown door. Another check mark in the win column.









With some massaging and some Archer rivets it’s a pretty good representation of this signature car in the train.

My Phrozen Sonic Mini 8k finally arrived. After some quick setup and calibration prints, I jumped on one model I have been waiting for a very long time to print out, a CNR motor car.

I am thoroughly impressed by this machine, the print quality is exquisit. Those rivets are roughly 50 microns thick and rendered perfectly. The radiator is actually see through. I printed this out with the Phrozen 8k resin, havent tried any other resins yet in the SM8K. Going to have a lot of fun with this printer!

Beautiful model, and I'm happy to see they are shipping as I have one on order myself!

I managed a couple of hours of scenery time this afternoon, before dinner.  I worked on vegetation, the beaver dam and lodge in Letourneau Gorge, named after my good friend Louis a/k/a "Trainforfun."  I need to add gnawed stumps, cattails and reeds and a little water texture.

That is a great scene @Pomperaugrr.  The beaver dam is fantastic and so rarely modelled.

I am impressed by all the modeling shown so far, whether 3D or old school.
I was able to sneak a few hours of scenery time in last night.  I added layers of static grass, home made and commercial grass tufts, and some bushes, etc. to the area around Specialty Minerals on my N scale Housatonic shelf layout.  I am still learning and experimenting as I go.

I would say, YOU learn pretty Well!!

Got a freebie J&J NE caboose Kit about a week ago. Spent the weekend trying to put makeup on an old pig.
It was good practice though, lot easier than a FnC kit for sure.

So, has 3D printing finally gotten to the point where totally smooth (striation-free) surfaces are possible, or am I seeing things?

Its pretty close to what you would expect from injection molded parts, at least to the naked eye. Under extreme magnification you will always see layers though, and depending what the print orientation is you may see more pronounced layer lines in certain areas. Shallow slopes relative to the printing plain will still produce layer lines. That said, you can eliminate the worst of whatever stepping is left with some careful planning in print orientation. I am thoroughly impressed by the Sonic Mini 8k and the 8k resin.

A little over 2.5 hours, printed with 50 micron layer height. Havent tried printing finer layer heights yet.

Impressive!   how does it hold up when trimming away the supports?
