I don't know if it'll get you all the way there, but it might be a valuable component.

Well F#$k.  Now I have to buy a 3D printer so I can make a few trees every night.

So here's some proof that I'm not ONLY using the technology for evil.

I needed a custom yard track spacing jig, so I drew it up in TinkerCad, sliced and diced and 45 minutes later I was in business.

Well, kinda. I didn't know what shrinkage or dimensional accuracy would be like and didn't worry about figuring it out.

I had to do a little filling but it worked.

Is that the closest one for you?

At this price, it's worth asking a local friend to hook you up.

Ouch. But I feel ya. I was incredibly excited when they opened one nearby. When I was a young nerd my friends and I used to hang out at the one in Radnor outside Philly. There have been numerous times when I've swung over to mine here and thought "young me would be so proud".

... I'm intimidated by the 3-D design process. I dabbled with Google Sketch-Up while I was still working at the Air Force Academy, but never did anything as complex as, say, a boiler to fit a specific mech.
TinkerCad.   It's free and it can be used to do incredibly precise and complex stuff once you get the hang of it--which takes almost no time.  I have used it to create working mechanisms in 1:450 scale including gears.  And frankly I don't feel the need to learn anything more complex, like SolidWorks.   Here's the latest shell (1:300 scale fitting a TGauge mechanism):

I looked at Tinkercad. I know the idea is to start simple and move up.

I feel like maybe a good starting point might be things like boxes, barrels, and other assorted details. Then maybe matriculate up to flatcar loads and similar items.

One day I'd love to do a boiler and tender shell replacement for an MDC HOn3 outside-framed 2-8-0 to make it look more like Silverton Northern 34. But that's way over the horizon!
