Really cool!

I wonder if they will be able to replace that infernal combustion thingy on the tail end with an open platform observation car some day.

I would hope, I'm sure it was there for safety purposes since it was a test. According to the video description they did have a malfunction that caused them to cut it short. The whistle cord broke.

They couldn't tie it back together?

In the N scale section there is a discussion of Railsmith's latest announcement, and speculation about various dome cars.  I see the WM now has an ex-GN full-length dome, so there's another paint scheme he could do them in.
