Wiking August Release

Wiking's August release includes a four vehicle set in which each of the four vehicles is usable for North American themed layouts.  This was the old N13 set initially released in 1971, and includes the 1970-74 Ford Capri I (sold by Mercury dealers as the Capri), the 1965-72 Porsche 911, the 1970-74 Audi 100, and the 1968-72 Volkswagen 411.  https://www.wiking.de/shop/neu/august/vier-klassische-personenwagen.html

While it is up to the modeler to "detail" the cars, the early Wiking N scale tooling still produces very good low cost models.

I don't know why they started (and continue) doing it. I even contacted them about this, but I didn't get very far (they thanked me for the comments).  Well, I suspect they are doing it to hide the fact that these vintage (but nice) vehicles do not have interiors (which nowadays eems to be a requirement for N scale vehicles).

Someone should take those smoky blobs, recast them in clear resin, and sell them to people who want to have see-through windows in their cars.

This!

I have maybe one the first releases. The Porsche is orange, the Capri is red and the VW 411 is a light grey.
I'm not sure the Audi is in that set or maybe I lost it...

Were the Audi and VW popular at that time in the US?

I didn't think the 411 was very popular in USA. According to https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Volkswagen_Type_4 in the United States, VW sold 119,627 Type 4s from 1971 to July 1974.   I think that VW Type 3 was more popular. The Fastback, the Square-back, and the Wagon.  Of course the VW Beetle was the most popular model.

The caption in "product details" (courtesy of the "translate" button on my browser) says:

Quote
Porsche and Ford Capri body alternately pea green and silver, VW 411 and Audi 100 each signal blue and red. Black-gray chassis.

So...if you wait until the product arrives at your local hobby shop, you will have a choice on color of your Porsche....assuming you are there at the moment they arrive.  I remember that pea green color.  I had a neighbor in the college apartment complex in the early 70s who got one of the Porsche bodied / VW mechanical 914s in that color:
Not his car, but it looked just like this:

I tried to put the photo here, but it came out HUGE, I need to read up on how to control that....

Thomas,

Here is a table of the production runs of this set through 2005.

It looks like your set was one of the two 1971 releases.

And, here is a photo of my first set of these models from 1971.  It sure is hard to believe that was 50 years ago!   :o

This is awesome Carter! Maybe add another column for window glass - clear vs "Gangsta Tint"!  ;)

It is worth noting that the headlights on these are euro style, which on some models is different than what we saw in the U.S. (for example, the Capri sold in the U.S. (as Mercury Capri) had quad 5 3/4" round headlights).

I am glad that I have the earlier releases in my "inventory".  :D

If you want the forum to display it smaller, add "width=###" in the image code.  Here I put width=300 in the image code.

Funny that the Wiking  VW 411 already depicts the quad round headligths.

Thanks.  I knew there was a way to do it.  That is such an ugly color, I felt morally obligated not to display it larger than necessary.

Yes, I'm sure it is. I inherited them and others from my brother, who had an N scale layout in the early 70's.

Thanks for the table/info.

You could get the quad round headlights in Germany as well. I think it depended on the car features.
I'm not sure if this is valid for this model but surley for the later ones, from 1972 onwards.

This is a Capi II form 1978 and later:
