Ouch!  That's going to be expensive to fix!

Thanks Ed, now I have a prototype to point to the next time I lose the handle on a model.

Frankly, that whole rig looks pretty flimsy for locomotive lifting.  What kinda miracle nylon strapping is that?

I have a mind like a steel trap...a VERY rusty, old steel trap.

At lease they didn't drop it on the gap between the dock and ship - or on somebody.  Not clear that "best practices" were being followed there.

Always check the ratchet straps and nylon for wear and tear.

They did that with a new GE-built loco in England in 2011, and an EMD in Africa a few years later.  Apparently it isn't an uncommon accident.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/British_Rail_Class_70_(diesel)

"The first two locomotives arrived at Newport Docks on 8 November 2009.[13][14] The delivery gave GE its first locomotives in service on the British rail network. The first locomotive was given the name 'PowerHaul' at Leeds on 24 November 2009.[4]
Four more locomotives were delivered to the UK on 2 December 2009.[15] On operation tests, 70001 hauled a 30-wagon train consisting of 60 iso containers during December 2009.[15] 70002 also hauled a 19 hopper 1,300-tonne (1,400-ton) coal train in the same month.[16]
On 5 January 2011, 70012 was dropped while being unloaded at Newport Dock when part of the lifting gear failed, causing the locomotive to fall back into the hold of the ship and being severely damaged.[17] "

I wonder how did the ship's cargo hold faired.  I would think a ship's cargo hold would be more delicate than a loco, especially a falling one, comparatively speaking.

Apparently it survived, as I would think it sinking would have made even bigger headlines:

Isn't that what that clown in Los Angeles tried to do last year?

I’m pretty sure that’s a pier that it fell onto, not a ship. The pier is engineered to support the crane that’s unloading the engine, so apart from some gnarly dings in the asphalt, I don’t think real damage was ever a possibility.

True that the OP was about a loco falling onto a dock.

But, it reply #9, nkalanaga  posted about a different accident:

Quote
"On 5 January 2011, 70012 was dropped while being unloaded at Newport Dock when part of the lifting gear failed, causing the locomotive to fall back into the hold of the ship and being severely damaged."

So far, there have been 3 separate loco drop accidents posted to this thread, all due to rigging failures.  Seems like they need to hire better riggers!
