Weekend Update 10/18/20

A productive weekend for me.  I wired up my 5 passenger yard through tracks, 7 stub end passenger tracks, and the first of three freight yards.

In case you could not tell, I have too many cars, so it is time for a used car lot. I’m scratch-building a small office for the car lot and here are some ideas for signs.  Anyone know the vintage of the OK Used Cars sign?

I just got a request to build a small building for a Oil Dealer.  The use of the door and windows are near prefect...

Busy weekend this weekend.

Saturday morning we collected our next foster: Princess.





I was still able to get a little modeling done. First doing the most model railroady thing I think I've ever done: building a wooden kit from a bunch of sticks (and some milled pieces).



And then working on my layout chunk. It's just an old oNeTRAK frame I've got with some foam on top. It's basically just a large photo diorama. I did, however, discover the fun of trying to solder O scale track. I'm not sure my iron is up to it on a regular basis. Geez!

Here it is getting the track sprayed.



And getting another layer of foam applied on the one side.



Sadly, after that last photo, Princess and Darcy (our other smaller pup) got into it. Darcy inadvertently got in her personal space and there was some snapping and Darce got caught in the snoot. So then I got to spend some quality time in the Shark while the vet checked her out.



This was amazing. Despite using the "V word" a number of times, Damian would not leave his sister's side. He wanted to go with us and would not get out of the car. So here's a gratuitous shot of him waiting with me while the queen got checked out. Luckily everything was just superficial and she came home with some antibiotics just to be sure.



There are few rules in our house when it comes to fosters. They can pee in our bedroom. They can poop in our kitchen. But if they F with the Shep Squad, they're outta here. So that's my project for this morning, sadly.

That said, any of you DMV guys looking for a pup: if you want a sweet girl who's a bit of a couch potato, MAGSR (https://magsr.org/) has the pup for you!

Thank you! It’s true, between wire handrails and Z Scale couplers, you can really change the look of a locomotive.

Adjusting dogs are adjusting dogs.

I'm not saying I'll welcome those things, but they're not cause for them to get sent back to the kennel.

Canine psychology is fascinating...and at times frustrating...and yet what makes dogs so amazing.  Even if you don't like dogs you cannot help but be impressed by what they can be trained to do and how they demonstrate unconditional love.

Ed, mad props to you.  I'm very glad there are fosters out there.  Our Ranger was fostered briefly before we adopted him.  I struggle with wanting to do it.  On the one hand, I love dogs and really want to help place them into loving homes...on the other I'm not inclined to want to deal with the messes, the personality conflicts, or the goodbyes.  Maybe someday.  For now, though, Ranger's a bit iffy around other dogs (he has dog friends in the neighborhood but he's always skittish around new dogs) and now that he's become an elder dog, he's sort of earned the right to be the only dog. 

Patricia and I are also on the cusp of empty nesting...Jacob leaves for college in less than a year, and Tim's two years behind that.  That's part of why we bought our first RV this year (that and apparently I don't have enough money-sucking hobbies, right?).  Patricia has opened the door to having more than one dog after the boys go to college.

We have been replacing the kids with dogs as they have gone off to college - in effect trading one messy animal for another!  Have two rescues thus far.  Dogs, being social animals, generally sort things out but not all the time, unfortunately.

We belonged to a Dalmatian rescue group for several years, since disbanded. Here's our Dal, Moe-Ray (standing), with one of our fosters, April. April was in love with Moe and vice versa, so obvious in this picture. To watch them tussle and wear each other out was amazing. To this day we regret not failing the foster process on her, where "failing" means you become their humans for life.

Our Sherlock (looks like Benji) was fostered along with his brother and others rescued from a puppy mill that was raided.  The foster Mom told us he'd never heard a doorbell, kitchen appliance or TV before he came to her house.  He's about 13 now and the BEST!
