Not complaining, but I'm pretty sure the old Rivarossi stainless steel coaches are a different,  earlier, 52-seat Rock Island prototype.
I painted them for the Golden State anyway.

Just of note, the new Kato 21st Century Limited 12 DBR car is a direct match for the Rock Island's La Jolla and La Palma cars sans the fluting, which you can get from Union Station Products.

Good evening all,

If I may...the old Rivarossi coaches are Rock Island cars.  lot 6627, Pullman plan 7435.  Originally 52 seat coaches.  4 were built.  Waterloo, Goldenrod, Mistletoe, & Hawthorne.  From Pullman Standard Library Volume 8, Rock Island.

Somewhere I have a picture of the Rock Island Rocky Mountain Rocket's diner Centennial on the Golden State.  No red paint.  Budd built.

Don't remember if I saw the Shore series cars mentioned.  Originally NYC Atlantic Shore and Lake Shore going to RI as Lake Shore and I think Pacific Shore.  I may need help with this one.

Finally Bachmann has RI Pullman observation- LaMirada - body with a Budd Roof.  Not in RI markings but maybe if I sand the fluting off the roof and get out the airbrush???????

@Bobster  - thanks for the Rock Island info.    I have on of the Bachmann "La Mirada" cars in my project box.  Unfortunately, sanding the roof corrugations isn't going to be enough (or rather, filling and sanding), and in any event will be awfully hard to do well.   I'm considering the following approach:

1.  Cut off the roof except over the boat-tail end and replace it with a Kato or American Limited roof.
2.  Cut off the letterboards and fabricate new ones - styrene and Union Station corrugations laminate on top.

This would be a lot closer, but because of the way the car is fabricated it will be challenging for me to do well.  The other, more minor, problem is the vestibule doors - those wouldn't be too hard to replace.

I was thinking about taking the car apart carefully to see how flat it sits.  Then mount an Exacto blade horizontally and scribe the roof until I cut through the sides.  Put it in a V-block vertically and then cut the ends where needed.  Are you thinking of the Kato Observation car from the Super Chief set?  As similar as the cars basic designs are I bet the roof would work.  More research needed.

I haven't picked up my "La Mirada project" car yet so I hadn't got as far as the researching letter boards.  The modeling bug hasn't bit me recently so I still have a few other projects I need to finish, especially my Wabash Cannon Ball heavyweight observation.  Just a little more interior work, roof vents, then paint and decals.  The there are some RI cabooses too, and then the Bachmann steamer modification to a Rock Island 2100 series steamer.  Oh and someday a Wabash Blue Bird, and then......

Good info above on Golden State. I'm interested in models that can be repainted for the Golden State. Fred Klein's site and a few historical posts have been useful.

Wikipedia says that "shortly before World War II, three streamlined dining cars (Yucca, Saguaro and Ocotillo) were built by Budd for service on the train. These cars were placed on the Twin Star Rocket in 1945 and later returned to the Golden State." These cars appear to be very close to the Kato Budd diner. I found photos of these cars after they were sold to other lines (e.g. https://www.flickr.com/photos/mbernero/32647151300) but have not found photos if them in silver/red Golden State. Does anyone know if they were ever in that paint scheme, or were they perhaps transferred to the Golden State only after it no longer was silver/red?

Here's Rock Island 6-6-4 Golden Locket.  It's a Kato car with Microscale decals and Tru Color paint. Just finished today.



Here are two more 6-6-4 cars in progress - SP Golden Sea and Golden Cloud. They are stalled until window glass arrives from Kato.

What's wrong with this picture?




Besides the fact that this isn't quite the correct body style for this RPO (it's a Wheels of Time kit, by the way), someone painted the baggage doors prior to assembly and assumed that they sat at the same height as the RPO door.   
I can't decide if I want to remove the doors (they're glued in) and try again or not.

yes - the casting is slightly warped.   I'm going to glue the roof to the body (not done yet) and call it good.
