Do you think the tower was replaced or just rebuilt?

Definitely rebuilt. First, there are many structural differences--height, window/door placement, etc. Also note its orientation is different--the newer one is aligned with the CNW ore line instead of the CNW branch line.

Looks, to my eye, that the tower was modified (and moved!) at some point.

Looks like the track to the upper left was torn up.

Yup, the track on the branch line is definitely torn up.

Really? I think there is still some track visible, at least the crossing.

I just found out that this photo was also posted on CNW Historical Society facebook page.
It is said that it dates back to 1971.

In the older photo the signal to the left is just cut out of it. You can see the pole.

I'm guessing there was a wreck there at one point that took out the tower.

Nice, good news that the tower was standing so late.

Here's another reference to the may, 1971 Photo date.

http://towns-and-nature.blogspot.com/2017/10/tesch-mi-junciton-tower-c-vs-c-vs-soowc.html

The tower was definitely torn down and replaced, the newer one is a brick structure.

There's alot of potential hottness to this plan, the CNW between Iron Mountain and Escanaba, the Soo line to Gladstone, throw in a little Escanaba & Lake Superior for seasoning.  :D Pure Filth!

Yeah, and don't forget some Milw power. The CNW and Milw had an agreement to share power on the ore trains.

Yeah, the diamond is still there, but just to the left there is a gap in the rails, then a bit that looks like it was pulled up and left just out of position. Maybe it’s technically out of service but could be put back in service with an hours work?

USGS Earth Explorer.

Chris,

Can anyone use that site? I'm trying to find some track arrangements for a few small town in northern Wisconsin. But it looks like I'd need to register to get where I need to go. And judging from the registration process it looks like it's somewhat restrictive.

Thanks

I registered a while ago and they have never contacted me at all.

It is a little goofy to use, but it works. You search by area. Select single frame photos. Go to results and pick by the year. There is a little foot icon, when you press it the area of the photo shows on the map to make sure you have the right one. Download the high res file. Unzip the file and save a very large .tiff file. Crop it in a photo editor and save as a .jpg. Post online  :)
