Rules for RR XING signs?
« on: April 16, 2020, 01:32:10 PM »

I'm modeling a scene where there's a short private road coming off a highway. Said road crosses a couple of tracks before entering the parking area for the business in question (a large grain elevator operation). I'm currently debating whether or not that crossing needs anything in the way of RR XING signs.

I found this place (which is a similar sort of situation) and was kind of surprised to see that there weren't any signs at all. Is this typical? Are there any rules for this stuff?

Thanks!

Looking at online photos, this type of signage seems typical:

Yes, there are rules, and recommended practices based on the amount of traffic. That un-signed crossing is a liability lawyer's w-- dream. It is the RRs responsibility to assure the crossing is properly marked, and given the quality of the grading and the obvious maintenance of the RR ROW it is clear the RR knows about the crossing (versus a farmer "rolling his own" without notification). @Point353 's stop sign example is good example of an RP for the lowest levels of private traffic, but given that the picture appears to be of a small commercial elevator with public access, passive crossbucks with a stop or yield sign would be in order.

I tried to find the rules in an online MUTCD, but it's all engineer-speak so a clear and easy reference for this scenario was nowhere to be found.

Well, I do like the idea of adding crossbucks (more details = more fun). Thanks for giving me permission, and thanks to both of you for the info  :D

Maybe something like this:

You might try this site for the "official" rules, from the "Manual of Uniform Traffic Control Devices".
https://ceprofs.civil.tamu.edu/ghawkins/MUTCD-History.htm

For some earlier versions, this site has them, as free PDFs, going back to the beginning of standardized signs.
http://www.trafficsign.us/oldmutcd.html

Note that the two sites cross-link to each other, so whichever one you visit, the date you want might actually be available on the other!
