To be honest, I really think that this whole "plastic safe" lubricant thing was made up by the model industry for people to only buy the expensive little bottles of "plastic safe oils for models".  Especially with the current plastics being much better quality than the polystyrene of the old days.

I'm pretty sure that all the ones I have used (Labelle, Woodland Scenics) are all petroleum-based non-synthetic "dino" oils. Plus synthetic oils have chemical composition similar to the "dino" oils - just purer.

I have never heard of anybody using a standard motor oil or a 3-in-1 light oil on models and  have their plastic loco parts melt or oterwise deterierate.  Can anybody point  me to any write-up that would state otherwise.

Josh, you can use any oil (including cooking olive oil).  The whole idea is that any oil repels water, and that is the purpose of using it in the first place.  Heck, you coudl just use some butter or peanut butter - any oily substance. :D

Hey, in today's litigious society (even between friends)  I don't blame you for being overly cautions, but I don't think olive oil will cause any damage to his plastic roadbed.  Many olive oils are packaged in plastic bottles.  :D

I know - I had a good chuckle at that one too.
I think Mr. Chicken simply copied/pasted some info from their website.  I'm also really surprised that he doesn't seem to own any "hobby lubricants". You figure that by now he would have some of that "plastic safe" stuff in his arsenal of hobby products. :|

OK, so Labelle is synthetic. I still doubt that a mineral oil will damage plastic.

I read this while I was at work today and got thinking about the Hetman line of grease and oils. When I was in the musical instrument repair business, I used to push these as my main line of lubricants. Don't get me wrong blue juice is a great product but Hetman has a large line of products and is a great quality product. I had many customers on many instruments switch to it and quite a few schools.

As to the relevance to this conversation, I got thinking that the Hetman line is a synthetic line. After I got home I checked my old allied repair catalogue. For those not in the repair business, this is one of the major suppliers just about anything you would need. I checked the Hetman section and all but a couple lubes are listed as synthetic. If you are using one of their oils, you should be fine. The ones that weren't listed as synthetic were a couple of the greases and one of them mentions the word synthetic.

Come to think of it, I think I have a decent sized box around here somewhere filled with Hetman products.

I actually use a few different oils because, well, bass trombones like to be complicated.
1. I have Thayer valves (axial flow rotors). The Blue juice goes in to those. Blue juice also doesn't muck up the slide lube (Slide-O-Mix is what I use).
2. I use Hetman 13 on my linkages. I am going to try out their "ball joint" oil.
