And this morning I did the rock work.

Selected an appropriate size of sifted Limestone.

Spread some PL Premium adhesive on with a tooth pic and then pressed the pieces into a pile of lime stone. I discovered after the first one that it was easier just to press them right into the bag instead of pouring the Limestone out onto the paper.

All the pieces mounted on a platform.

Added non-sanded grout.

And with the excess grout removed but not yet dry.

An idea of what it will look like.

Freaking fantastic -- There are not enough good structures in N that can be used unless you are modeling a DPM town . this is great work and gives you some unique structures .. well done

That stonework looks amazing! I'll have to remember this for other scenarios where the technique could be adapted.
Because why not...

Really enjoying this thread, Craig - loving the use of materials on hand, especially the houses (not to mention the clever addition of DPM bits) and the mix of scratchbuild and kitmingling. Great work!

Thank you very much. These are the first structures I’ve ever built and I’m really enjoying it. Having built many locomotives, freight and passenger cars, I’m no stranger to kitbashing… but they have gone in a drawer. These buildings really make visible changes to my railroad and its inspiring to actually see the changes… which makes me want to continue.

This module has 9 houses and three cabins in total so I’m on my way, but there’s lots to do. I’m stuck right now on a mostly scratch built house which has quite a complicated roof.

Loving it, Craig! Building protobased scenes and especially structures is so much more involved and time consuming then freelancing, but definitely rewarding....and you're nailing it! Keep'em coming....

It’s been a busy summer but I was able to trudge forward a bit last night. This house is one of the river front properties and has a yard that gently slopes from the street down to the river. It also has a driveway beside the house thst goes to the back yard. I made the basic foot print of the house a while back, which allowed me to start the driveways, and then ultimately create the land form that the house will sit in. This house is interesting in that it slopes back from the street to the river, but the road it’s on is also on a slight down hill from the right to the left when viewing the house. This slope is built into the driveway and at the street edge at front of the property.

This morning I roughly cut the house into its home on the layout. Turns out it’s a perfect fit. I eyeballed the driveway shape last night, and the road a couple of years ago. Nice!!

Time to assess the next door neighbours house.

So here’s what I have for the neighbours house as far as reference material….

Streetview:

Google Earth:

It’s the one next to the blue circled house.

And a grab from a drone video that a guy who runs a tube renting business on the river posted:

In an effort to try to reduce the amount of scratchbuilding and kit bashing I had to do, I went in search of a house that has the general look that’s good enough, because as we can see, not much of this house is visible anyway.

I found a 3D printed house with the right kind of shape on Amazon of all places and decided to give it a try.

In the pictures on line it was clear there wasn’t a huge amount of nice detail but I figured maybe since most of it would be hidden I could work with it. But when I assembled it, it was not “good enough”.

So I decided to use it it as a core and cut all of the sides out. Can’t win ‘em all!  Haha.

Here it is in place on it’s parcel of land. It needs to be made deeper so it’s proportions better match the footprint of the Map view. This will also acomodate the lower level basement walk out.

The next step is to cut it in half and laminate some styrene sides onto it. I was able to get to Credit Valley Railway Co. This week and am armed with an additional 3 sizes of Evergreen clapboard siding.

Now that I have a better selection of siding, I reassessed the river front house from a few weeks ago. Cutting out the holes in the styrene sides weakened it and nothing was straight anymore. So I’ve added a bunch or bracing along the bottoms and tops of the walls (top bracing not pictured). Now the house is straight and strong. So it’s ready for siding as well.

I’m hoping to get this tomorrow.

Craig

Nice kit bashing on the houses Craig and the stonework walls are genius! The google earth and pirated drone views are a great resource for planning the neighborhood too.

Thanks Brent!

I finally had a chance to get back to the river front house.

As a reminder, here’s what I’m trying to build.

It got siding:

Drip cap on top of the siding:

Then paneling above that:

A flat roof with flashing over the addition:

And then the three other peaked roofs:

Finally i put some soffits under the roof edges as needed.

I’m calling the basic structure of this house done. It needs a lot more detail but I think I have the flavour of it just about right.

Craig.

Going back to this house now….

As I mentioned before I picked up this little 3D printed house on Amazon and was very displeased with the, well, everything.

I decided to use it as a core and turned it into this:

Placing it on the property I decided that it needs a larger foot print than the model.

I cut the model in half at the sides and proceeded to add the top floor sides.

Then gable ends and a sheet of .010” styrene that will act as a base on which to build the wrap around deck.

Next I built a box out of siding for the lower floor, some of which will be hidden as it’s below grade.

And finally a roof.

The next step will be to massage it into the landscape.
