I'm curious though, if you had thought of one nut over the end of the shaft and just ACCing paper or Styrene blades to that one surface.
Unless I missed something, it appears the fan motion is 3 of those nuts forming a triangle around the shaft?

That was the original plan. The problem was cutting the material (paper or Styrene) into blade shapes. Another problem was gluing these parts--they refused to stay flat, as the capillary action of the glue would pull them out of place. I spent hours trying dozens of variations on this theme. I finally had to solder brass parts, and that was hard enough. What would be ideal is having the finished fan blade assembly shape photo-etched as one part. Maybe someday...

Since I was looking over older posts in this thread, where did those chairs come from?  They look to be laser cut and are perfect for this type of a scene. I could use some.

So the day was swallowed whole by one project: window fan. Or... fans. Usually if I'm building an animation I've built before, I like to up the stakes, so this time I went for better scale accuracy and making two instead of one. At a scale 24 inches wide, these guys look pretty crude under the scrutiny of a macro lens, but to the eye they're fine. To set the scene, they're in the window display of the hardware store. Eventually I'll make a sign saying, "FAN SALE". Also, they'll be illuminated by a four-foot fluorescent light hanging directly overhead. Please enjoy:

Stunning! Maybe you could/should sell these as a small batch series.

Think anyone is willing to pay $1000 for one?

Here's a sign to put in the other front window of the hardware store:

I have made a window neon sign similar to  that.  Scribed the logo on some 0.010 clear styrene, painted the bottom and side edges black, and lit the top edge with an LED (hidden in the ceiling).  For multi-colored sign (I contemplated that) I would just stack more clear layers - one for each color.

OK, so, disclaimer: This is all @VonRyan 's fault. I'd just finished the box fans for the hardware store, and with tongue firmly planted in cheek, he dryly remarked, "OK, so now I want to see you make a working desk fan. That oscillates." Thinking I'd just give him the finger, he instead saw me start to stare out into space, going, "Hmmm..."

And here I was feeling all celebratory having made two sets of feeders on rail joiners. Frack -‘guess I’ll see myself out now.

@VonRyan - keep pushing him. But keep learning. Someone has to take his mantle one day.
