Cleaned out those slots on commutator. They were barely visible before, that's why I couldn't see them.
  Motor works great now, will continue to spin for about 2 secs. after I remove power leads from Kato power pack!
  Nice and cool.

But are they still noisy?  I have a few and I'd love to put a sound decoder in them but it's just not worth it.  Someday I'll see if there is anything to be done - new gears or something.  It may be a lost cause.

John, my loco discussed here is a bit quieter. I don't have a layout yet to run on, just 6' of flex on a board. Some folks actually like the noise. I think a lot of the noise is echoing from within the shell. After removing fuel tank, the shell comes off real easy. Perhaps small pieces of electrical tape over the mounting nubs on frame will help.
