LokSound Micro V-5

Anyone have a pin out to color information? Soldering wires to the NEXT 18 adaptor after cutting of the ribbon strip.
Need to know what color wire goes to what pin, looking down at plug view.
Thanks

See http://www.sbs4dcc.com/tutorialstipstricks/dccelectricalinterfaceconnectors.html for that and other connector pinouts.

The legends are in German (but easily understood), however the color codes are universal.
What is cool about this pin arrengement is that even if someone managed to plug the decoder in backwards (rotated 180 degrees), it would still have most of the functions working (without any problems, and without releasing the magic smoke).

The pin outs are actually marked on the top of the adapter board.

Row of pads toward the body of the decoder:

TR = Track Right = Red
A1 = Auxiliary 1 = Green
U+ = universal common + = Blue
A2 = Aux 2 = Purple (a wire should already be soldered here)
TL = Track Left = Black

Row of pads toward the ribbon cable:

RL = Rear Light = Yellow
M+ = Motor + = Orange
Then comes the two speaker wires which are already soldered on
M- = Motor - = Gray

Then at the very tip of the adapter where the ribbon cable is attached is a pad for FL - Front Light = White

The attachment for Ground (for the negative side of a keep alive) is the first pad (the pad closest to the end of the board) on the row of 3 on the right side (if holding the decoder with the adapter board/cable facing you) of the body of the decoder - see diagram on page 19 of the LokSound 5 manual.

Note that the adapter will separate from the Next18 socket VERY easily once the shrink-wrap is cut to allow you to solder the wires. Wrap some tape around it to hold it on when you are done attaching the wires.

Hi Pete.

Maybe I'm wrong, but I think Woodone is asking about soldering wires to the Next18 adapter board that plugs into the Next18 socket on the decoder, not soldering to the actual pins of the Next18 socket itself.  Actually, I don't think I COULD solder wires to those pins - even with the Pace.  My hands aren't that steady.  No brain surgery for me!

Check page 25 of the ESU Loksound 5 Manuel.   I think that’s what you might be looking for.

I'm sure you're right. I thought that by providing the connector pin-out, he would be able to easily trace the signals back to the flex circuit's traces.

You are correct John. I am having enough problems soldering the wire to where the flat cable was.
I think that I could solder the wires to the NEXT 18  footprint if I could hold the wire in place. They are so small that when you breath they move..
The marking on the back, did not make sense to me? Did not spend a lot of time trying to figure them out.

Just an update. For those who are interested. Looking down at the Next18 adaptor board ( the one with the flat ribbon cable) the first ribbon is for the gray wire, second ribbon is for the black wire, third ribbon is for the white wire, forth is for the blue wire, fifth is for the green wire, sixth is orange, seventh is for the red wire and eighth is for the yellow wire.
There are three more wires on the adaptor board but are soldered to the back,  two brown for the speaker and one purple for a AUX function.
BTW you can now get an adaptor from ESU that has the NEXT18 plug with wires already attached.
John I see where you noted using an Pace soldering iron. I also think that Peteski had made note of the same iron.
Wow, from what I see listed these are very pricy, which are you guys using. Not sure I need a $600.00 soldering station.
Now mind you I am not tool shy, I just spent $1500.00 for a desk top milling machine, now I have to tool it up.
Tools never seem to come to the end of needing.

Here is the info you asked for:

I recommend reading that entire thread.

I don't know where you saw a $600 price.  Pace makes a lot of soldering stations, but the ST-50 that I bought was under $300.  It has since been discontinued; the apparent replacement is the ADS200 system with the TD200 handpiece, which I think is pretty much the same size as the TD100 I have with my ST-50.  Here's a whole kit from Amazon (Soldering station, handpiece, 4 tips, iron holder with cleaning accessories) for $299:

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07KY58984/ref=cm_sw_em_r_mt_dp_U_4js.DbBFC0A8R

Yes, you can get cheaper stuff that will do the job, but the Pace has been invaluable - as the thread Peteski pointed to notes, it's really the handpiece that is the key.  It's like holding a pencil (well, maybe more like a Montblanc fountain pen), and THAT is what allows such precision work.  I just couldn't do some of the stuff I do now without it.

The most important part of this soldering station is the TD100  handpiece. It works with any Pace Intelliheat base station.  Also, what John did not mention is that the heating element is fairly short and very thin, which makes precision soldering a breeze.  Also replacement cartridges (the tipp with integral heater are usually less than $20).

Like John's my soldering station is the ST 50 base unit, and the TD100 handpiece, with multiple tips.

I bought mine from:
https://www.tequipment.net/Pace-1/soldering-equipment-1/soldering-stations/

Looks like Pace came out with yet another series of soldering equipment (AccuDrive).   :|  The basic unit costs $220 (no tips, so you can choose your own tips).
https://www.tequipment.net/Pace/ADS200-8007-0578/Soldering-Stations/

Looks like the older (IntelliHeat) model is still available, but with analog temperature control).

It's someone on Amazon taking advantage of the fact the ST-50 is discontinued and jacking up the price.  https://www.amazon.com/PACE-ST50-Digital-Station-display/dp/B00JPOQDTY

I bought the ST-50 on Amazon on February 20th, 2018 and paid $315 for the package.

Funny, looking at my ST-50 and the new ADS200 I see the same case and front panel design (albeit with different graphics).

Woodone, Hi and Merry Christmas.
I’m wondering why not just solder wires to the pads that are on the end of the ribbon supplied with the decoder and snip off the ribbon near the next 18 connector?
I’m assuming you are trying to solder to the cut ends of the ribbon, excuse me me if I have misunderstood.
Perhaps added height was a concern?
Also, you can get a lok5dcc decoder with the wires already mounted on the next 18 connector rather than the ribbon cable.  It’s the 58823 version.
BTW the Pace soldering station is a really nice one, but the Weller shown in the link posted by Peteski is a good one too and the one I use. Replacement and assorted size tips etc are easily obtained for it too.

Well not knowing what to look for, I saw pricing from about $300.00 and up. Looks like the TD-100 hand piece is the way to go with an SD70 power station just under $100.00. I will have to shop around.
Steve, I had started this project just after I got my first V-5 micro, and it only had the ribbon cable. Now there are several types and adaptor boards.
I cut the ribbon off close to the adaptor board. I did this because I needed to keep the decoder has short has possible
I have the install complete now.
Working well.
