I may have been too hasty in my original judgement; with rails on it, the curve does not look nearly as tight as I thought it was. Looking good.

Now the real "fun" begins... building the turnout.

Ties are laid and the first rail is getting spiked down.
This is either gonna be a fun adventure or an exercise in futility.

The turnout is in progress, as is the other track.

It doesn't look like you filed down the inside base of the rail where the points are going to mate with the stock rails.  Better yet make life easier on yourself and make it a stub switch.

If you can't make it perfect, make it adjustable.

I would take it a step further and suggest that a stub switch is probably more appropriate in this situation anyway.  Small industrial railroads typically did the least amount of trackwork necessary to accomplish the mission.

That's coming eventually. Or I'll just file the points to match prototype ones so I won't have to modify the outside rails.


I would take it a step further and suggest that a stub switch is probably more appropriate in this situation anyway.  Small industrial railroads typically did the least amount of trackwork necessary to accomplish the mission.

I considered a stub switch, but in terms of the parts required to make one, especially given how I'm building the rest of the track, I decided a normal turnout would be better.

So at what point does an experiment become a layout? At this point I've basically gone from just getting a feel for tracklaying to actually constructing what actually might be a useable piece of layout.

Rather than tackle the turnout tonight I continued with the other leg off the turnout. I got more ties put down and rail getting spiked into place. Not all the spikes are in at the moment, but enough are in that it's at least a stable piece of track.

Perhaps, its already larger than some mini layouts I see tumbling around on YouTube.
