CV Ext. Vision Cabeese

I bought an N Atlas RS11 in CV paint from BLW closeout sale. So I need a CV caboose.
 Went to FF site, and they look like this; http://www.rr-fallenflags.org/cv/cv-c4040abp.jpg.
  Wow a lot of extras on there. Ditch lights, grabs all over the place, and what looks like
  loco underframe lights. But what gets me, is the smoke stacks, "upside down" from
  what I've seen before. Can anyone offer any insight on all the extras?

It's a Canadian caboose... I think Rapido made the model as an exclusive for one of the Canadian dealers.. Its a St. Something design caboose.

I'm guessing it's late era CV.. (beyond the RS11).. and there is an earlier CV caboose that would fit better with an RS 11..

Ahh.. a Pointe St. Charles Caboose..

If your a prototype stickler, it is likely the closest match.. Beyond that, an Athearn wood caboose or Atlas/Bachmann 3 window cupola caboose would be a closer visual match for an RS11.

Any way you go.. some paint and decals are required if you want the CV logo.. (Athearn may have fone the leaf logo at one point, and Atlas may have done the CV logo on a 5 window steel caboose) 

Looks like Athearn and Bluford both produced a CV leaf logo on the wood caboose.  It is a closer match than I thought..

I would go with the Athearn "Van" because it's a much closer match to the paint and Logo.
But depending on your era you are modeling you may need to repaint anyway. The "Maple
Leaf" scheme didn't make it much past 1964 because they started repainting them into the "Wet
Noodle" scheme about 1960.

I am very familiar with the CV404x group of vans (cabooses).  I helped restore van CV4043 with a group of friends over a 9 year period.  They were built in 1972 at International Car Company in Kenton OH.  They mostly followed the standard 40 foot extended vision caboose model that was supplied to many other American railroads.  But it looks like CV ordered them with every available option, and then made up a few custom options for these vans.  Some of these, including CV4043, were later sold by CV to GTW, who stripped out many of the nicer features.  We spent a lot of time researching what was removed, and replacing it to as built condition, or better.  Amazingly, many of the lights, hardware, paint, and brackets were still available from the original vendors.  I still have a set of drawings that list part numbers for the parts purchased by ICC for these vans.  We found a sister van in original untouched condition in a museum in Komoka Ontario.  It was extremely useful to use as a reference of what was removed on our van. 

Technically, the closest N scale model would be the Atlas extended vision caboose.  But the large windows, and all of the extra details would be a challenge.  And the end doors on the CV vans were offset from the centerline of the car by 10 inches, due to the large end windows.  The Pt. St. Charles caboose mentioned above is a close match for many of the details.  But the car body is about 8 feet too long, and the cupola is wrong.  If you just need a companion model with the RS11, a wooden caboose would be easier to match with the wooden vans of the CV.

Woops.. tried to edit a spelling correction on my previous post and ended up reposting the whole thing.

... So is that where the GTW extended vision Van's came from, or were they a combination of CV and DTI.. (I remember seeing what looked like a normal extended vision van which now looks like the DTI caboose.. I dont recall a GTW caboose that resembled a St. Charles caboose.. 

Our shortline in Iowa has 2 DTI EV cabooses and 1 GTW transfer caboose.. not sure how they got here..

With as much 'tall' traffic (Autoparts/Autoracks) as GTW handled, I'm surprized they didnt have more EV and Bay Window cabooses.

 Yes looks like I need a wood-sided van. I don't mind repainting. It's just to have a CV van with my only CV loco.
 Have to look for the proper wet noodle CN decals. Do that over the cold weekend coming here to CT.

Ah... That definitely gives a bit more info as far as Era is concerned...

The units in the green paint scheme weren't acquired until 1979 (they were DWP units before that) so a steel caboose would be more appropriate if you want to go 100% prototypical.

So, we had a difference of opinions on which van would be right. For 1979, I would think the EV van would be more suitable.
  Now to find one, the search begins.
  I like doing research before starting a project, it's fun.
  But with all else I have to do, sometimes close enough will do.

 Got the yellow topped van today. Great looking model for most part. Does seem a bit light.
 I can't get the overly bright track powered interior lights to go off with the wand.
( I have other cars with EZ Peasy lights, and no trouble with wand there.)

That CV caboose is NOT a CN/Point Ste. Charles van.

The only similarity are the added options like the rear inspection lights and electric markers. As noted by someone else it's an American ICC-built caboose.

The Atlas EV (based on an ICC prototype) is definitely more appropriate for the base body of the car and add details as appropriate.
