Ed's a wee leprechaun.  A Polish leprechaun, but wee nonetheless.  He'll need a box to stand on if the track is at 30"

A few more progress photos.

A panorama of the room. Why do I need to build a layout? To hide all the crap under it!

A quick snap to see how the wall color works. I like it (well, enough to not go paint it all).

Gonna show some leg here. This has been ok, so far. I'm thinking that when I add some fascia and tie it into the legs themselves it'll strengthen everything up even more.

LOL, I took a different tack...  I calculated with the load bearing members and the 500-lb wall brackets bolted into the studs that the RGS could easily hold up my Subaru.  But, if you bump it, it doesn't move a millimeter.

Just a suggestion, but you might want to attach a 1X4 to each long edge of your HCD. I had an HCD layout that started developing a sag and the 1X4’s straightened it right up. My HCD was a really cheap door.

I've been telling him that offline...  Hopefully enough of us can convince him it's a trivial extra effort and expense with a big payoff.

I applied the fascia and glued and screwed it to the HCD.  That made it like an H-beam.  Otherwise, yeah, it’ll sag, especially if supported only from the ends.

What did you use for fascia?  I had some sagging on the JD even with 1/8" Masonite fascia.  But I also didn't extend the fascia below the base of the door, so that might have been part of the problem.

I'm planning to use some 1/4 luaun plywood I have on hand to do the fascia, then add a band of door casing to trim it out along the edge of the door.  The plywood will cover the foam, and the casing will stiffen everything up.

Since it will also protect below the bottom surface of the door, it will also serve as a light balance for the work area under the layout.  (I'm setting the whole mess on a second hand desk I scared up.)

This also let's me cheat the benchwork gods...

My door layout has 2 L-girders under it.

I would have made the legs out of 1x2s with cross bracing. Probably less weight than 2x4s.

Or screw directly into studs around the w... oh nevermind.

I'm into the girder idea. It'll be implemented.

I used 1/4” Masonite and extended it at least 3/4” below the HCD to hide the 1” x 4” strapping that the banquet table legs were secured to.

The nice thing about the girders is you can get those legs moved more inward out of kick range.

That's a good thought, but then I'd have issues with screwing the bracing in to the hollow part of the door.
