Very nice mini-diorama.

After spraying the ribbon with matte finish clear coat, it appears to be a tad stiffer, but the ribbon came loose from the tape, so I still have some "oil canning" to deal with.  I'm going to try it again, using pins to secure it nice and taught, and see how that works.  There's got to be a way to make this method look better.
Thanks for applying gentle pressure to keep me trying...

As a somewhat serious UP/Santa Fe modeler, I cringe every time I see that Bachmann thing, especially when mated with that particular Vandy tender. 
But the display is nicely done. Maybe if the loco were lettered for Western Maryland, about which I know little, instead of a UP Big Boy, I would find it less bothersome and appreciate it for what it is...?

I dig...  The object of the game is to do the best we can with what we have available.  The model is a dog, both appearance wise and operationally.  So in order to justify the carbon that was expended to create it, I'm just hoping to have something that's a plausible use for it, if not an accurate one!

I think what bothers me most about your chain link fence is the sheen.  If you can reduce that, I think the "oil canning" will be minimized.  I don't have the slightest idea whether Dullcote or a shot of gray paint would work better . . .or at all.

I'm pretty sure that the flat, gray paint would be best.

Putting paint on the ribbon to get rid of the sheen is likely to make the strands look too thick.

How about some really thin gray ink?  Maybe just run a gray (not black) Magic Marker over it? 

I have a Magic Marker set from Walmart with 21 different colors that is sold as "school supplies."  It has been really handy for coloring things like polyester fiber that gets matted with any paint of even India ink that I tried first.  I am sure that the gray one would take the sheen off the ribbon. 

And, since the gray would look like galvanizing, a little sheen would not look bad in places, since new chain link can look pretty shiny in bright sun.

Ya put a light coat on it, several until yer satisfied with the results.  I didn't mean dip it in a bucket of paint, I meant to either spray bomb it or airbrush it, both of which will allow very light coats.

The matte finish knocks down the sheen perfectly, and doesnt effect the appearance of the web otherwise.
In the middle of several household projects, so it might be a bit before I can complete the experiment.
