I am coming to the end of my 70% rebuild and it is finally time to attack the peninsula turnback problem.

Turnbacks are always a problem to hide so most times you are forced to go to a hill or mountain to hide/break up the non-prototypical 180-270 degree curve. Then there is the issue of keeping your expensive engines and cars off the floor. With only an inch or two to work with you need to create barrier between the “end of the world” and the floor.

I decided to make as much of a Sculptamold rise as I could in the limited space. So I got a roll of duct tape and taped it to the end of the 5/8” plywood and then bent it back on itself so it wouldn’t stick to the Sculptamold (and to make it sturdier).

When that was in place, I added bottle fir trees to the outer edge. Their wire frames are definitely sturdy enough to bounce the cars back onto the layout if the ridge itself doesn’t stop them.

I finished my Precision Scale Co. K4 "rebuild" this week. New worm gear, new coreless Maxon motor, new traction tires, LED headlight, Tsunami 2 sound, TCS KA4 keep-alive, and a 9x16mm sugar cube speaker. I had to make a few other tweaks - styrene shims to prevent some of the insulated wheels from causing shorts against the loco chassis, replacing the pilot truck spring, and so on. Some weathering and a coal load later, it's working like a champ, now! I'm glad to have a brass postwar K4 on the roster.

@rickb773 The little lip of scenery that you made to keep stuff on the layout looks very nice. Not something I often see on layouts.

Just back from the cottage and hurriedly preparing for the big, bi-annual VanRail op event in a few weeks.  First up is to finish and install a bunch of CPR standard structures I worked on at the lake...

The back 5 are for Farron Summit so they still need to be "snowed".

The front two are for Shields siding 8 miles west of Castlegar on the climb to Farron.

Pusher sets often meet their westbound charges here.

And an overview shot showing Shields clinging to the cliffs above Lower Arrow Lake.

Have a great weekend!

I like the kink in the straight stock rail of that turnout.  I've seen modelers, including myself, do that to keep wheels from picking the point.  Many articles say "don't do that", but here's a prototype for it.

Thats pretty much my approach as well .. I have one turn back where there is only 1 inch between the track and disaster .. so a ditch, and trees, and bushes solves most of the problems ..

Hey @Chris333 , I think it came up before due to the tight radius of the curve, but are the stringers on that center span of your trestle actually curved?

Well it's not curved, but not straight either  ;)  It is 3 straight sections. It is a 10" radius and straight just didn't look right. Makes it hard to take good photos here as well. BTW every car in that train is 3D printed!

Exactly!  I don't get it either.  As always, Chris did a wonderful job on that scene.

It's just a saying the kids are using. Plus I copied a Bachmann On30 boxcar for HOn30.

I commissioned a guy to paint a stock Atlas Rock Island RS3 up as a close enough rendition of the RS3m engines I get to operate on the MDDE. I'm quite happy with it! Now it'll be off soon to get a decoder install. I wish I could do what my guy can.
