I actually prefer the thin CA for many of my gluing tasks (including pewter). It all depends on the type of joint I'm making. If it will benefit from the capillary action, I use thin stuff. For other joints I use the standard (medium?) thickness. I almost never use the thick stuff.
Also don't forget to get the accelerator - I find it an indispensable pairing with the CA glue. The BSI brand is my absolute favorite: low odor, doesn't set the glue too fast, and it doesn't not attack paint or polystyrene (since I use it on plastic too).
