Thurmond, WV

I was cruising past some channels on Cable for those that still have that and a show caught my eye on Discovery called "Mysteries Of The Abandoned".
Interesting show in general but the episode last night had a segment on the C&O and the town of Thurmond, WV focusing on the boom and bust of the mining, hotels and railroad lines in the area.
It was remarkable when they showed current day CSX trains traversing the rails through an abandoned town that still looked inhabitable.

It's been a few years, but the last time I was there it was inhabited.  Not many people, but it was completely abandoned.  It's also one of the starting points for rafting trips on the New River.

Never was many people there - peaked at 462 in 1930 census.

Henry Ford bought the mine but couldn't buy the railroad. He was hellbent on controlling every aspect for production, and when he couldn't get the railroad, the mine went up for sale.
