We might turn our noses up at those GPs, but I'll tell ya, I bet they're CRITICAL to getting the next wave of modelers into the hobby and it's about time that someone's making "entry level" stuff that represents what people actually see out there on the rails like that.

I'll probably get one of the J's, and then promptly replace the "sound value" decoder and speaker with something that works.  I need the J as one more piece in my "steam excursion" fleet :).  And the J was always one of those rare Bachmann models that performed well.  BUT . . . I don't understand why they use an Econami (a really nice decoder for steam; not as great for diesel, but still OK) in the EM-1 and other models, and use their crap Sound Value (essentially a stripped-down first-generation Tsunami) decoder in the J.

The list price is crazy, but they will have a street price of about half that.

The cards say they all use an econami sound value decoder. What that really means, I don't know other than to replace with with esu loksound

Just like the EM1 and for example the SD9 last year, the J will feature an Econami. My guess is that the ‘value’ part consist of less different chuffs, whistle’s etc. in other words, the sound should be quite good when they include a good speaker install.
