Looks like the General Motors  style designers were not part of the sale

Considering General Motors doesn't own EMD anymore they probably weren't...  :D
The Railwire is not your personal army.

I like them. They have clean lines and look good. As a conductor who's ridden a few, I really like them. They're quiet, comfortable, smooth riding, and the notched hood really helps forward visibility. And when they first started showing up, they smelled like a new car!

I'm sure that functionality-wise  they are awesome, but they are still very utilitarian-looking (read: plain and ugly).  :)

Now THAT is a definite plus!

Yup, always detractors with every new diesel going way back to the FT's and even before.

Other than a taller mid section ...

The 'humpback whale' look.

The mid section looks like a hunchback mated with a whale, and the hand drier style DB vents are fugly, but that CSX logo is the worst. They need lots of grime.

CBQ Fan:  I also agree that "they all look the same".  They're impressive enough on a passing train, but I haven't tried to keep up with identifying them.  Not seeing trains regularly from 1985 to 2012 didn't help!

Where I lived, and worked, the only trains I saw, unless I went looking for one, was the CSX local to Kentucky Electric Steel, and that didn't get the modern power.  Not being a fan of CSX, or Chessie, or NW/NS, AND working nights, I didn't make much effort to watch trains.

This are SD70ACe-T4,

Looks like they were, GM knows how to make ugly vehicles. Just look at the current lineup, only Toyota makes an uglier car.
um....you forgot about the Marcos Mantis

I think they look like an unholy mating between a GE and a toaster.

Or the Nissan Juke.

Pontiac Aztec, the new Silverado, any caddy after 1980, any GMC after 1990, they even manage to ruin the Camaro.
At least Datsun has the GTR to make up for it.

As far as what was EMD, they though the SD70 with flares was too good looking so they gave us the ACE/M2. Same thing happen with the GP30.
Which ever side of the track I am on is the right side.

Or the Nissan Juke.

[politically incorrect]

There is a specific "school" of vehicle design for models primarily appealing to women, notably single and/or independent-thinking. The Pontiac Sunbird was a classic in this genre, which I will offend many by calling it "a secretary's an administrative assistant's car". Given the demise of sedans, this design objective - with the questionable help of marketing clinics - has resulted in the mis-shapen and oddly-proportioned monstrosities such as the Nissan Juke and Leaf, the Buick Encore, and almost the entire Toyota small-vehicle lineup.

Pay close attention to ads for these kinds of vehicles and make note of the actors representing their target market. You're damn tootin' not going to see a rugged-appearing male actor in an Encore TV spot. They save him for pickup truck commercials.

The main point is... when it comes to vehicle design, we - as mostly over-50 males - are not going to be caught dead driving the swoopy-for-swoopy's-sake crap the girls like.

:D
