Weekend Update 6/16/19

With all the Comet talk this week, I thought it might be good to start on a related project : the  MBTA Messerschmitt coach and cab cars. These were bought in 1988 to supplement the Comets. I believe these were the first cars to feature restrooms on the MBTA.

Spent the weekend at the Waupaca train show. Having been a fan of the place, enough so to model it's train environs on my layout, I had been wanting to visit the show for many years. Amazing: small town, small show, free admission, but packed with neat items, nice layouts, and a surprisingly good selection of items to buy.






The historical society has done an amazing job of restoring the depot. It was great that it was open 8 to 9 both days too. It allowed me plenty of time to visit it Saturday after the show closed. It was nice to meet Mike and thank him for all his work. He wrote the article about restoring it in the SOO historical magazine. The group has aquired some pieces of real rolling stock as well.

A quick video of my 1954 AT&SF El Capitan.  Most of these cars are now correct prototypes for the train.  I still need to do two more Baggage/Express cars to swap out two of the 1956 Kato cars.  Other than that, it's pretty close to prototype.

You're probably aware of this but for the sake of others, there's a Virtual Railfan camera on the top of the depot.  VR is a website/YouTube channel showing live streams from around the country from some iconic (and not so) locations like Horsehoe Curve, Barstow, Flagstaff, Kansas City, etc.

Jesse6669:  Where do you get 1mm square rod?  That sounds like what I need for N scale log bunks.  Plastic is too fragile, round brass rod doesn't look right, and 1/16 inch square is too big.

It is styrene (PVC iirc) found somewhere on Ebay.  It seems like it came from China..  Sorry if that wasn't clear.

Jesse6669:  Aaahhhh...  Thank you, anyway.  I'm already using Evergreen 0.04 inch square styrene, which is almost the same.  I was hoping you'd found some brass.

Since I don't model PRR anymore, and Rapido is making a lot of NH passenger cars,  I have no homeroad passenger car kitbashes. Thus I find myself kitbashing cars for a friend who models an obscure RR called the NKP -- cars no other railroad used, and only a few existed of each. This is a baggage car:



Lots of work yet to do; plus the NKP had hugely deep letterboards, so I'll need to add those to the finished project. Had to cut up two WOT cars to make this one.

I'm glad someone is working on a kitbash for that car type, as it will increase the probability of a manufacturer releasing one.

I have some similar cars on my kitbash list (several Midwest roads had mail-baggage cars with 2 doors in similar pattern, with 2 or 3 window RPO section).  Wondering what you are using for the RPO doors and windows.
