It seems to be announced so far only on facebook: https://www.facebook.com/pg/officialkatousainc/posts/?ref=page_internal

"Today, Kato USA announces it's first newest "mini-named train" set...the N Scale Chicago & North Western “400” Train 6-Unit Bookcase set! This set is ideal for collectors and C&NW enthusiasts, who can use the train as-is to model their favorite C&NW 400 Train, like the Flambeau 400, or can simplify the train down to replicate commuter service!

This bookcase set will include an EMD E8 C&NW locomotive, along with 5 newly-tooled C&NW Pullman Bi-Level cars! This set will be available in Analog (available November 2019), as well as DCC and DCC w/ Sound (available December 2019)."

Good for you C&NW fans... however... this better not result in a run of Crandall Cabs. I shudder in the memory of the UP B-units who gave their lives for those abominations.   :D

(The Crandall project ate-up one of the largest fleets of E8 and E9Bs. Past UP Heritage managers have wrung their hands at length about not having any reasonably-preserved B-units available anywhere to build a proper ABBA set for excursions.)

A whopping 6 of them?  (CNW 501-506)

Naa...the Crandalls would do well as a 3d printed shell on a Kato mechanism, but as an actual production item...you can put the pitchforks away.  ;)

Enjoy!

Oh, darn. I had already lit the torch. :P

Didn't realize there were only six; I should'a checked. Steve Lee ranted about the "loss" back when he ran the Heritage shops. Apparently a touchy issue.

Was this train a winner in a Kato web poll?

Love that Kato is doing "the train that set the pace for the world," but only bi-level coaches? What about the first 20 years of service? Were bi-level cars ever even used on the Twin Cities 400?

The C&NW is my road, but this is a non-starter for me. I already have BLI's E6 and E7 in yellow and green, so the E8 doesn't do much for me, either. Congrats to those of you who can use 'em.

Wow. I'm shocked. Shocked!

Shocked that they would produce this set, and shocked that this is how they are doing it. This paves the way for RTA bi-levels that match the F40PH units they've already done for Metra. And this will allow some of us to model a real 400. Though definitely not the 400 I wanted to model (Streamlined 400).

I'm definitely down for a set.

Nope. I thought the same thing. But, I can repaint these into Rock Island, no big deal. Still wish it were the TA Rocket.

I have a soft spot for train cars I actually rode in, once upon a time.  So, yes, I want this.  But....unfortunately, not made of money, just started the first phase of moving into DCC, have to have a tree chopped up due to windstorm, quite probably something interesting from Rapido on the 24th, and, maybe, just maybe, if it ever really happens, a small fleet MT of single window coaches. And, my passenger trains all terminate at the station south of the Loop, whereas these terminated north of the Loop.

But still, somebody remind me....when was the last CNW train to Green Bay?  I remember taking one all the way there just before Amtrak took over, but maybe it was just to Milwaukee and the rest of the trip by bus (I did this a few times during my college days up there).

I have a mind like a steel trap...a VERY rusty, old steel trap.

well, the WOT cars are a different prototype,  so if that matters to someone they might still bid high.

I'm sorry Dave, I'm afraid I can't do that.

Interesting choice, this are intercity bi-level, Amtrak got this cars in 72 and retire them in th early 90’s. They ran with the pooches
Which ever side of the track I am on is the right side.
