How did you get from the first picture to the second?  Paint over the black over sprays?

They're the same, the second one is just shot against the light. The spray is flat dark brown.

Question from a neophyte: do you mask the rails before applying paint?

Nope, just the switch points. The whole idea is to paint the rails so they don't look so big and brilliant. The paint is easily cleaned from the railheads a number of different ways. I drag a sharp knife along the rails, then follow with emery cloth--after ballasting.

Clone, eh? Learning more and more of early N scale history everyday!  Very interesting.

Here's Heljan's version of the same kit. Same basic lines, just a little different in its proportions and details (or lack thereof).

Haha. That one is on my workbench right now. Mine is out of a Life-Like box.

I would have expected Life-Like repackage Pola, not Heljan kit.

DKS: I never realized just how different those kits were. Except the general shape, they are very different.

Yes, some of those kits are quite handy for kitbashing.  While not the same kit, I used the Pola kits sold by Model Power to kitbash the "Little Debbie Bakery" brick building in the center of the photo.  I used the GE Building and the Sawtooth Roof Factory.

I bought the Atlas factory way back then because of the tall smokestack. See how young minds work?

I remember MR bashed the Con-Cor factory (Heljan) for the 1968-69 project railroad to eliminate the clerestory so it was just a building with a changing pitch roof about halfway up.

TWSS.

And speaking of tall smokestacks, the Pola machine factory complex is inching closer to completion.

That'll be great.

BTW, I got my five Minitrix uncouplers today. It was actually six as he included an extra that was unpackaged. All NOS even if the packages are a bit scruffy.

He said he had 17 in stock. Not sure if that was before or after you ordered your five, but that's still a lot of those suckers.

Those are the exact buildings I  used for my McKee Li'l Debbie bakery. They are very modular.
