Beg to differ:

Nice try, but a bit lacking in the number of axles. And it has a face only mother could love.
. . . 42 . . .

Ngineer:  The GN W-1 was impressive, but not particularly successful.  Built in 1947, retired in 1956, and nobody else wanted them.  The UP put a turbine in one of the carbodies, and for all I know, it may have run longer that way.  The first Little Joe was completed in 1948, had fewer motors, 8 instead of 12, and greater horsepower, in a smaller locomotive.  The W-1s had far greater tractive effort, but that's because the Joes were built as light passenger locomotives for export.

I wouldn't mind having a W-1, but it would look silly on most model railroads, and I'm sure I'd never run it.

A GN Y or Z, now, I'd buy.  The MILW could have used those, and changing the AC/DC motor/generator to a DC/DC version would have been simple.  But the MILW in the 50s didn't want MG units.  The Y could also be sold in a PRR version, offering two roads from the same basic model.

Big Boy? Meh. Overrated. I've always wanted to model one of these beasts.

Well, nothing is as impressive as a Big Boy.
Let's just not bother modeling anything else
Otto K.

I too beg to differ. The C&O H-8 was bigger.

I hope to have a 2-10-2 chassis in a few months.
Are you making one for personal use, or is that a potential commercial venture?

The Little Joe and the Bi-polar would go well with the Kato's Olympian Hiawatha.
They could release both at some point.

I hope you meant 4-12-2 UP type

I hope to have a 2-10-2 chassis in a few months.

If you are doing it as a commercial venture, I would be very much interested!  What are you making the chassis out of?

You totally missed my point. I would love to see one of those 2-10-2s (or even 4-12-2), but let's face it, manufacturers (like Kato) usually go for the flashier or more impressive models.  That's what I was saying.

I voted for the Li'l Joe.

No Pete, I totally did get your point and totally agree with it; I was being facetious hence the face palm.
And yes, as impressive as the Big Boy is, I don't even own one because it doesn't fit the time and place I model.
(The only time a Big Boy went over Cajon was dead-in-tow on its way to be displayed at the Pomona Fairgrounds).
Yes, there are many other impressive steam locos out there I would love to see, Santa Fe steam foremost on my admittedly selfish list: 2-10-2's, big 4-8-4's, Texas types among others. With the big 2926 Santa Fe Northern being restored and almost operational in Albuquerque, one would hope a quality model of it would make sense in the market...

If Kato has extra Mikado mechanisms taking up space they could use them to make this loco:

Or maybe this--

Even though it's photoshopped, someone still modeled one...

In complete ignorance that a rigid boiler of that length defies multiple laws of physics. That's an incredible amount of trouble to go through for what amounts to a joke.

My great friend Adam ( @draskouasshat ) has been bugging me to get this done for awhile now and with the Photon printer, I hope to see if my plan is viable.

Being I have a lot of info on the UP type 4-12-2, have some etched drive rods already, and the Kato Mike drivers are correct size, I'll be using it for R&D. I'm in the process of drawing the frame to use the stock Kato mike motor, but will have a extra set of gears to lower the final gear ratio. The first thing I need to do, is see if the resin is capable to withstand the temperature and pressure (375 degrees and 3500 psi for 40 minutes) of using it as a master for vulcanizing a rubber mold for spincasting. So, when the weather gets better and we have a few warm days that I'm able to get out into my shop, I'll give the vulcanizing a try. If it works, then I'll be doing the first castings with lead free britannia metal (what I use cost about $35 a pound). Zamak is a much better choice for price ($3.50 a pound) and weight, but needs to be cast with silicone rubber molds that I'll need to buy. If the resin doesn't work, then I'll have to make a mold of the printed parts with regular silicone and cast the masters with JB Weld and use them as masters for vulcanizing the spincasting molds.

So if all of that works, I'll start on the drawings for the 2-10-2 and 2-10-4 Santa Fe type chassis.

We need to find a source for the correct drivers. Adam is working on that and if they can't be found, then we have a couple of other ways to get them. Investment castings or Shapeway's 3D printed out of brass. Either method would require the drivers to be plated with nickle as what Max ( @mmagliaro ) did with the loco he built from scratch. Investment castings can be made if we have a set to make a mold with. Or draw them up in CAD and then they could be printed in brass or cast in brass from printed masters.  Drive rods will be etched in either nickle or brass. I haven't investigated that far yet.

I guess I need to start a thread on this when I start the casting process.
