How cool will it be when we can scan ourselves and print us out in N scale so we can actually be the engineer of a train...

I immediately thought of Big Bang Theory when Raj and Howard got action figures of themselves.

I guess you can do that now.

I don't know if they will print the model of you in n scale though.

The fun just keeps on going!  This one is another idea I've had for a while that I'm really excited about.  Last time I brought up this concept around here, it was shot down with a bazooka.  Well now I have the proof of concept and results!  8)

Train passengers.  Not the kind you buy 6 at a time for 14 bucks.  The kind you simply swap an OEM interior with a pre-populated extra!

On the left, Kato's OEM upper dome car interior.  In the back, the 3D print.  On the right, the (crudely) painted 3D print.  (Oh, and save those print platforms! They make great paint palettes!)

Nice!  You are one of the few who owns the hardware and has the CAD skills to take your hobby to this level.  Congratulations!

I do recall someone here (you?) a while back mentioning dong this.  I don't recall what were the reasons to shut your down, but looking at this now I would think that with the price of FUD printing in Shapeways, the cost of printing the replacement interior with integrated figures could have been a problem.

Now, that you own your printer and the cost is negligible, this idea becomes quite doable.  However I still question the need for printing the entire  new interior insert with integrated figures. The factory-made interior is just as good as the 3D printed version. Why not just print the figures? Just flatten their bums, and if needed, shorten the legs so they fit properly. Then add a mounting sprue at the bottom of their bum to be used as a handle for painting, then easily snapped off later.  Having the figures separate will make painting easier, and just printing the figures with painting handles will result in much cheaper cost of populating your train.  Plus, the figures will be universal (not tied to a specific interior insert piece).  While your one-piece replacement interior sure has a "Wow factor", just printing the figures makes much more sense to me.

The only scenario where printing new interior insert would make sense to me would be if the car had large windows with thin and very clear windows, and you wanted to print a more detailed realistic interior (more than just a rough representations of seats on standard factory-provided interiors).

I upvoted you Peteski.  I agree with all points.

I am in awe @Mark W of what you're able to accomplish in seemingly so litttle time.
You are a very well rounded modeler.
Kudos!

Ah, well...

Huh, there isn't a need.  Shoot, that saves a heck of a lot of time, resin, and headache too!

I guess I just had this idea for so long, that they would be a single piece you just swap out, never occurred to me to consider otherwise.
Thanks for the feedback!

Back on the topic of figures and body scans. I searched through Thingiverse and found a lot more!  Here's a bunch that just finished up and are heading to the cure station.  (More legs to check out too!   Ohdear.)

Looks like you found a new hobby (and possibly even a new business venture) Mark!  Nice to see you behaving like a kid excited with a new toy on Christmas morning. I love it!

If and when I get good enough with CAD, I might ask for your services. I have few projects in the back of my mind.

Interesting. When I was 24 I broke mine. Didn't think it was amusing, tho...

Anyhoo, back to the show...

Ok, let's have it.  Hit me with your best snark.

Did I miss an opportunity to paint the bikini Conrail Blue?  :ashat:

Nah. Grandma already has Conrail Blue booties. How apropos... :D
On a more serious note, it always amazes me just how bad items that are customarily done and accepted way oversize look when placed next to a properly scaled model (not that grandma here is all that out of scale).
Very nice work, Mark. I'm really looking forward to see where this takes us and our hobby.

I guess I just had this idea for so long, that they would be a single piece you just swap out, never occurred to me to consider otherwise.

I could imagine interest in both approaches.  I might prefer the individual pieces for all of the reasons mentioned but for those not wanting to play with getting the figures to fit the seats, positioned properly, etc, the one piece has it covered.  Paint and go.  And at the same time, when making the individual figures (which might be easier to paint as separate parts :| :)) it would be good to keep those seat fit issues in mind.

Regardless of the method, with the ability to more accurately control the dimensions, what you're demonstrating has huge promise for populating N scale! 8)

That is why in my post I mentioned adding a "painting handle", and also flattening their bums and shortening their legs (so they will easily fit standard N scale interiors).

N Scale 3D Printer Fashion Show

Katie starts us off tonight with this lovely fall arraignment...
Looks like she grabbed things at random and threw them on.

Emma shows off a nice crop top.
She has just about gone crazy from all these Anycubic Photon posts.

If they were to be positioned seated I see at least one :o that would need a LOT of filing. :)
