Definitely looking for ATSF and CR in run #2 - - but debating if MP or DRGW would be likely in East Coast in 1990's - probably yes...

I did some asking around on the Modern Freight Car and OP SIG yahoo groups about what insulated boxcars would have been assigned to the Miller Beer plant in Fort Worth. No one had any specific answer, but basically it appears that RBL/XLI boxcars like these in beer service were allocated based on where the traffic was going and the part of the run that the road had.

So I found that MP and SLSF had boxacrs in a pool for a brewery that was served by the Southern either in Memphis or Atlanta. The Budweiser brewery in Houston had BN, MP, ATSF and UP cars assigned in the early 80's.

I think they key thing is that the brewery would serve the area  of your railroad and that the cars assigned are at least of roughly similar capacity in cubic feet and door configuration. So my small pool of cars for my Budwesier distributor consists of cars in the 5000 to 4400 cubic foot range with 12' single doors. This means PC&F cars from Wheels of Time and Atlas FGE boxcars.

The D&RGW order was for 250  (51' ) in 1972. This more than quadrupled (approx) the number of RBLs available, after also 250 of  FGE styled 50'ers (purchase not leased) in 1971.

Same year the road received 50 60's PC&F stretched version of the 51'ers, all assigned for Coors beer pool that shipped Eastward. Of course the Denver brewery was on C&S trackage, so it was 'their' consortium lead- hence C&S then later BN constituted greatest volume out.

These augmented the (few- only CB&Q  built/ WP consortium primary 60' RBLs delivered in 1967. Other 'beer cars' were the 52' Red Caboose type.

MP and Conrail appeared in the West after 1982 (uP takeover/ merger) for Westbound from Eastern breweries.

Conrail it was noted didn't use PC&F, but FGE? So... ?

FYI...the cars are in stock at MB Klein.  I ordered 2 MP, 1 SLSF, and 1 Nestle.

I thought about the Rio Grande one, but I realized it'd probably be full of Coors which, notoriously, was not available in Conrail country until 1986.

Rio Grande may have participated in a pool for beer that was only brewed back east but sold out in Colorado. Wasn't Pabst or one of the older brands that got beat by Miller/Bud by the 90''s only brewed back east?

That is a valuable piece of information I was not aware of.  Maybe I will pass on the DRGW cars.  I have multiple PC and MP preordered.  I like those SLSF cars though.

As Coors distributed 'concentrate' from Denver to the East first, then prepackaged beer via the C&S/RG/WP (To CA) and CBQ (BN)/ UP North and East RBLs till late.

After the MP merger, it was an Eastern car pool by A-Busch which sent MRS, SCL and CR cars West via the MP- St Louis route thru Pueblo, thence West to coast via Tennessee Pass (D&RGW content) and to Sou-Western states etc.

Thus two counter-balancing product pools... winners being the rrds?
