I wonder what the item below the turntable is? Looks like a transfer table, but it seems way too short for that.

I think it is a transfer table. At least it was there before they built the roundhouse.

No work on the layout this weekend, but I did have another ops session. I did some filing of switches after my last session and that seemed to help some of my issues. It was a fun session, this one clocked in at 1 hour 45 minutes. [ Guests cannot view attachments ]

Sure can be turned. That table only turns approximately 120 degrees but once they spin it they can come off at the track you see there in the right foreground. That track leads out to the mainline.

Mainline? That's cheating!   :)
I know, special circumstances require out of the box thinking.  :)

Yikes! :o Glad things weren't worse!

Couldn't help but notice the cattle that are still upright seem unphased, if not underwhelmed, by the whole experience. The one in the lower right corner appears to be giving the tipped cattle a "sucks to be you" gaze from a distance.

Was going to show a similar photo showing off my new Trainworx cattle hauler at the Bealville ranch along with a snarky comment to MR's Jim Kelly that said trailers were not all that hard to find...His current column caused me to slap my forehead wondering why I'd not gotten one of these...then to promptly go to ebay and get one.

But then a shutoff valve in the kitchen above malfunctioned and flooded the kitchen, and you guessed it, the main room containing the Bealville ranch.  You can see the trailer at an odd angle and other damage in the vicinity.

This image shows the other side of the peninsula.  Thus far, the ceiling tile must be replaced and the laminate floor as well, along with some drywall, and God knows what else they will find after things have dried out tomorrow.  Fortunately the contractor whose guy last touched that valve - no one can figure out HOW it happened - is responsible and insured.

Feel sorry for you Jim , had something similar a couple of years ago , we don't need that ! Hope you will find same flooring .
Thanks ,
Louis

Well that is outstanding Ed . We don't see the normal percentage of shuttered structures on model railroads as we do in real life .

Thanks, Louis and all.

The entire floor is being replaced, so something close will be fine.

My only fear is warping from the moisture, which has already caused two sections of scenery to deform.  Those sections will be easily repairable, and thus far the spline is doing it's thing and keeping the track stable.  Time will tell.

Sure can be turned. That table only turns approximately 120 degrees ...

I couldn't see how it could be turned it the turntable only turns 120 degrees.  Nothing can come on or off at the end of the table with the yellow (Hayes ??) wheel stops.  It would only end up on the concrete at the shortened yard side, or in the pit, anyway.

Then I noticed you're right that the engine can be turned, but the table rotates about 200 degrees.  The short end of the turntable can swing past the shortened part of the pit, so the long end can reach all of the tracks.

Thanks for making me pay attention to what the picture shows.

It also looks like part of my suspicion was right - the old "normal" turntable seems to be much smaller.  The area where the transfer table was has been replaced with through tracks, so all of this was probably done to convert a no longer needed shop complex to a museum operation.

Even so, it would be an interesting space-saver on a model railroad, and fun to pull out the pictures when someone complains that it isn't prototypical.

Although not completely correct E6 b units, my City of Los Angeles power is complete! @nickelplate759 the b unit you sent is the last unit!
[ Guests cannot view attachments ]
I also picked up an FT A/B set today luckily numbered 102. This set actually stayed in an A-B-B-B configuration due to them being early units that didn't mate well with post(ish)war FT deliveries.
I do need to find a Boyle more FT B units in Santa fe catwhisker id anyone has any to get rid of.

Now its time to figure out whay projects I'm taking with me out of town.

Since its installation in August 2008 my helix and its enclosure have remained open-topped, largely to facilitate access during derailments and other work required.  In reality the helix has performed exceptionally well and I have rarely had to go inside.  The time to cover the helix in anticipation of scenery has arrived.  Here is what it looks like prior to being covered:

I cut out a template for the cover from corrugated cardboard.  This was used to cut the front curve along the fascia, and to determine where the tracks would surface through the cover:

The cardboard template was then used by my friend John Walter to construct the permanent cover from MDF board.  Here it is in place during this morning's test fit:

The cover includes a 24" diameter access hatch which when removed will allow me to stand inside the helix.  It will now be removed for painting of the fascia, but not before running a test train with trailers on flat cars to the check the clearance underneath.  This will be the view as trains emerge from the helix onto the upper deck:

Meanwhile, work continues on installing servos and frog juicers underneath Chetwynd Yard.
