Well….when I bought the first geep it was a Reading GP9. I was able to buy a decorated SOU GP7 shell from Bachman for it. My next 2 Geeps were GP7s, also Bachmann. One was PRR and the other was Central of NJ. And of course Bachmann had no more Southern shells available. So I bought the B&O shells, figuring BO units would be more plausible than PRR and CNJ units showing up on the SOU. So let’s say SOU was short on power and leased these babies….

A pair of RS3s still wearing Interstate colors swap empties for loads…..

Very nice! The Interstate’s RS3’s wore their colors until the Southern moved them down to Georgia and the Carolinas shortly after closing their Appalachia yard and moving all their operations to Holton; never say never but iirc from my books the rs3’s never made it back to the old Interstate rails in Southern colors, it was just GP7’s and F units until they started buying GP38’s and the like

I have all three of the books on the Interstate by Ed and Hugh Wolfe. I have read the first two several times and just recently got the third one. If memory serves correctly, once they left the property they never came back. The IRR crews were not a fan of the f-units that replaced the rs3s.

I’ve got the first and third I think (the general history one and the collection of operating stories and schematics). That was what I recalled from them too. Just didn’t want to say NEVER returned.

Fun fact; in Carolina Shortlines vol 2 the only picture for one of the small Southern stubs is one of the old Interstate rs3’s on the property
