I think they came later? Ive seen many photos of SOU F units in coal country in the early 60s without nose heralds....

They look great, seems like almost a shame to dirty up those engines though.

I like what I see. I like that they're not super tall either, reminds me of real scenes along the railroad.

And when you get to that pulpwood yard, please show me how you model it.   I have a pulpwood yard on my layout, and I need guidance.  I really like the pulpwood yard you had on the old layout.

Not sure the new pulpwood yard will turn out as good as the original. That was one of my best scenes, I was very happy with the result altho I didn't really fuss over it more than any other scene. I think the key was the mud. That was just dull brown paint over the typical ground cover in areas where vehicles might go. And a thick coat of paint between the rails (over ballast) to sink the rails into the mud. Also using real twigs for the logs and woodchips/sawdust from my table saw everywhere else.
