Early Digitrax systems and sound keep-alive locos

They don't seem to like each other. Not my locos, but I have a friend who can't get his ST or Hornsby units to run on a Digitrax system. It just clicks like a short circuit, and the programming track refuses to read the decoders. What's with that?

Which early Digitrax System? The only early system that is not fully ncompatible with current systems is the old Challenger. It was DCC on the rails but did not have Loconet.
