I have two boys that would be very jealous of that layout if they saw it!

Nice work!

Progressing nicely, Aly! 8)  Will you have a place to use your Dad's train station?

Definitely!  It was already on the table and only removed last night for safekeeping while we build the layout.

That's awesome that your granddaughter likes to run trains and demonstrates control.  My daughter also likes to run the train slow.   I've actually told her at times that it's okay if she wants to run it a little faster.

DFF

Yeah, she first ran the HO layout and some of the locos don't really even go fast at full throttle so I didn't care if she whipped the control up all the way but she didn't want to do that.

"Testing, testing, 1, 2, 3 . . ."

I am off to pick up Aly from daycare; she'll be so excited when she sees that she can run a train tonight.  After work this afternoon, I set up the grades with the Woodland Scenics' risers and ran a full-blown test in both directions for several minutes at high speed, just in case Aly gets brave.  It passed the childproof test.  Here is the North Pole Express in push mode at ludicrous speed.  It may have gone to plaid.  I cannot believe that this thing stays on the rails, because those are 9-3/4" radius curves in the middle!

Send that to Kato for outside proof of concept, high speed + 9 3/4" curves + tall/long equipment doesn't equal disaster

I can't believe that I haven't been banned from TRW for this.  ;)  This layout violates every a$$hat rule that exists.  Sharp curves, steep grades, poor track to scenery ratio.  But, I love it, and, more importantly, Aly loves it.  She wants to put her houses back on the layout tonight.

By the way, that train in push mode is also ridiculous, because, while the F40PH has body-mounted couplers, the passenger cars have truck-mounted couplers!  Incredible.

At the end of the day, I sure hope a pink castle ends up on that layout!!

Are you planning to leave the table as a blank slate and let her imagination run wild?

Really cool..

I intend to fully finish it with her input.  She really likes @DKS's plan and wants to put houses where he placed them in her design.  This will get a mountain, tunnels, a road, and a river.  Aly wants to use at least one of the highway bridges that I salvaged from the expanded Seaboard Central 2.0.

DFF, thanks for posting that video.  I just got the 2016 set, including the two extra cars.  I was worried about 9-3/4 as my layout has a lot of that along with 11".  I'm not going to run it anywhere near that speed but I'm super impressed with what I saw in your video!  Got to hand it to Kato!  :D

Nice Dave, I may need to rethink my next layout design.

Aly populated the layout tonight.  She had a lot of fun.  She's also pretty good at running the NCE throttle, and it kills me how she can hold the large throttle confidently with one of her small five-year-old hands.  :) :) :)

But, later, when I was running one of my HO scale trains up top, she wanted to play with a locomotive with sound, and she was jamming on the bell and the horn.  Uh oh, fellas!  ;)
