Cells getting decent shots

Hmmm...can't seem to find this function in a S7.   

Open the camera and you'll see 3 dots above the shutter button. Swipe from left to right to change to the left menu and you'll see the setting there.

I use an app called Camera+ that does a decent job of macro stuff.

I have a S5 brand new still in a sealed box, my nokia 1020 just won't die and the 41 megapixel camera gives me some excellent results. I don't know why I hardly ever hear anyone discuss the merits of this unit, it was not a cheap phone but has well and truly out lasted many of the alternative brands used by my friends by at least two models.

It offers me a quick solution when time is tight to get some shots off with pleasing results.

Man, how big physically is that sensor on the phone (tiny)?  APS-C cameras have sensors that don't reach 41 MP and physically I'm sure they are much bigger than what's on a phone!

The ongoing "space race" between mobile device manufacturers has done great things for cell phone camera technology.

It still bugs the sh*t out of me to see people holding their frigging iPads up to take pictures, though.

I happen to like my iPad, for all kinds of useful things, even taking pics occasionally.

I hate to say for me it's come to the point that the cell phone camera is just so convenient, especially for wide-angle/mid/close range photos, that my two DSLR's have been sitting in the bag for months.  Only when I expect I'll need telephoto will I actually take the time to lug out the DLSRs.  And I think that's only happened once this past year.

Mark, that's a nice shot, very crisp for a cell phone camera. Much better than I could do with my iPhone, below. And I do concur with your sentiment about lugging the damn SLR's around....I recently even purchased a mirrorless compact (Panasonic GX 85) but I now find that even it is too brick like to carry around all day. It's one thing to have a camera in the car for those special shots, but hiking or even walking around for any length of time with it is a chore and my neck and shoulders hurt at the end of the day (or before) In that regard, slipping a cellphone in my back pocket is a joy.
Maybe a good topic would be "what's the best cellphone camera around?"

I believe it's  9x6 mm.  The individual pixels are much smaller than APC or Full Frame DSLR's which make its ability to collect light much less.

Still a remarkable device, before it's time.

Thanks, my cell does a great job. I can get decent shots from my Canon, but I can get even better results sometimes with my cell.

I discovered the "selective focus" feature on my Galaxy S5 several years ago, and it works okay most of the time.  I also really like the small size of my cell phone and how I can get down to track level to take photos I can't get to with my DSLR.  The cell phone cameras are great for subjects where you don't have to take shots quickly, or where you can let the phone's camera do the thinking for you, such as what to focus on, exposure or anything a "point & shoot" camera would do.

However, for portraits, sports, pets, wildlife, or anything involving out-of-the-ordinary exposure settings or times...or fast-reaction shutter speeds...or taking several photos per second...or taking photos for printing rather than viewing on your phone's screen or computer screen...or for wide-angle shots, or for telephoto shots, or for really dim light shots...phone cameras suck.

But, if you're just a person who snaps an occasional photo here and there...they are just fine.  But for anything serious photographically, a DSLR or mirrorless camera both with interchangeable lenses and things like powerful flashes, battery packs and durability...have it all over phone cameras.

Distance from the rails in the foreground in front of 4023 to the cliffs to the extreme right edge in the photo is approximately 12 feet.  This close up, I don't think ANY cell phone camera could have kept everything in focus, even with "selective focus" and since no cell phone camera that I know of will allow the user to select focus points, select manual aperture and shutter speed, shooting a series of photos to be combined in Photoshop or HF is impossible with them.  Here, the DSLR is clearly dominant and way beyond the capabilities of any phone camera.

Each has its advantages and disadvantages, but overall, for the serious photographer, the DSLR wins out...even though we're using the phone cams more and more because of their size and convenience.
