New MTL DODX 68' Flat and Injection molded M1 Tank kit

Back in the 80-90's when the Military Ocean Terminal was open, they were quite common on the Lehigh Line, running as MIL or DIM trains...   Sometime as few a$$ 3 cars, sometimes 50-60....

Thanks for the info.  Modeling CR in the 70's and early 80's.  The announcement shows the flats having conspicuity stripes so a bit late for me.  And of course modeling The Panhandle line west of Gould Tunnel I doubt many tanks if any went this route.  We did get to see the hulls of Abrams tanks moving through town here on their way to Lima, OH for rebuilding or whatever they did to them.  I think that program is finished but that would be a neat thing to model.  I'll have to bug my 3D savy friends for help designing one if I order some of these flats.  They may be too hard to pass up.  I can't remember if the flat is the same flat used since it's just the hull.  Have to find those photos I took.

I also hope that Micro-Trains will release the tanks separately.  I don't know much about the war gamer market, but maybe the war gamers would want to buy some tanks as well.

Wouldn't be of that much interest for the gamers.  Modern games are usually 6, 15, or 28mm (1/285,1/100,1/56)   IF I could post pictures, I have a large 15mm WW2 and modern British force that is mostly complete.

I've never seen these in the wild on anything other than dedicated trains, but that may well be an artifact of the specific routes I railfan.

I wondered the same thing, as I've only ever seen dedicated trains over Tehachapi.

Shipsure:  Thank you.  Guess I won't be buying any.  Too modern for 1974, although if they had been around then I might have gotten one.  There was a lot of military equipment moving as the Vietnam War wound down.

Here is one I took in 1998 .. Jessup Md .. the car was bad ordered, and a few days later the tank was gone ..



Of course, you don't have to limit yourself to US Military tanks either  .. this is a German Elephant (iirc) at Aberdeen Md in 1999

There are a lot of possibilities as far as loads like the Elephant.  The Ordnance Museum  at Aberdeen is/was being moved to Ft Lee and there was some things transferred to Ft Eustis so odd WW1 and up single car loads wouldn't be out of place 2005+.

There would be dedicated moves of M1s and such going to Ft Irwin (Bakersfield) as well.

Anyone ever try removing the lettering and conspicuity stripes from an MT car?  I didn't know if the old trick of Isopropyl alcohol would work or not.  Modeling 1979-1999 I need the cascade green flats, and more than just the 3 of them in set #1.

Camp fuel works, but you have to be very careful, it's a tedious process.  I generally follow the steps used with the "Micro Sol" technique...soak a piece of TP strategically covering the spot to be removed.   Difference is you have to let it set for much longer, (15-20 minutes?) and you have to keep reapplying the camp fuel every 4-5 minutes as it evaporates much faster than Micro Sol.   That's just my experience removing decoration from certain MTL cars, your mileage may vary and these cars may be more or less resistant to this technique.

BTW, the DODX cars do appear as singles or in small groups on occasion.    Typically on the front of a train for security reasons I think, but I don't think that is a hard and fast rule.  Maybe though.   Seems I always see them behind the engines.

That is because M1Ax tanks are a dimensional load...
