Got a new tripod, so here’s a slightly different angle that I couldn’t get well before.  Up to now, I always had to prop the phone up on the layout, but not anymore.

It's sure better than a lot of what you see there in MR!

Wow!  Thanks, guys!  I admit that I would like to see something of mine in MR.  It’s been a longtime goal of mine.  I just haven’t figured out how to properly upload a digital picture to their site.  I don’t understand the picture size nor how to figure that out.  I forget their digital requirements.  I’ll look that up and maybe someone can help me.

Forget MR -- submit to Railroad Model Craftsman -- they appreciate good modeling

You know, I never could get into RMC.  But, admittedly, it’s been decades since I probably even picked up an issue.  Because I grew up with an MR subscription that my parents started when I was 10 years old, and I saw what I would consider MR’s golden era (the 1980s), it’ll always be special to me.

I HIGHLY recommend it. It's become a really great magazine since Otto took over.

I'll make an intro.

I painted the tan stores on the large block along North Sycamore Street. The storefronts at the far right end remain in primer and will get a different color off-white, but I need to buy some paint to do that.

Yes, yes indeed. I have a subscription to RMC; MR I just peruse the newsstands because half the time it’s just mindless fluff; lately they’ve had Lou Sassi and a few other authors turned loose and it’s been a bit more substantive.

I got some finish on the roofs.  The first attempt at the black was not the flat black I was going for, so I sprayed a dark gray primer over top.  I liked this slightly more weathered color better, but the finish was chalky.  So, after I sprayed the silver on the standing seam metal roofing, I sprayed everything with a clear flat.

Because I’m a hack painter, I managed to get this cool crackle finish in spots that should give a great impression of the roofs baking in the hot summer sun.  I’ll eventually weather these roofs with chalk powders.

That building on the far end -- IGA or Western Auto?

I haven’t thought that far ahead.  Either could work well.

I painted the last body color of this block- the almond color on the stores at the right end.  From here, it’s trimwork, windows, doors, and, oh, of course, the mortar on the brickwork.

I don’t plan to add full interiors to these city buildings.  Instead, I’ll just use some tricks to make it look as if there’s life in there.  However, a gaping interior is obvious when you can see not just front to back but through what should be separate stores.  To prevent this, I added 0.060” black styrene for walls between the different stores in the first section of this block.  I’ll add another three or four “walls” in the other two-story section, too.

Thankfully, this didn’t seem to rack the structure, and it still sits on the sidewalks okay.  If anything, it pulled the back wall in and straightened it a little, so the roof now properly fits a little more snugly.

Unless the floors are just open space, you might want to add some side-to-side walls as well.  They don't have to be anything substantial, black paper will work just fine, and won't warp the walls.  It can look a little odd when someone looking in the front second-story windows can see out the back first-floor!
