Probably about as much fun as hand-forming a hundred from clay.

Clay comes in bricks, sorta like foam. Slice them both up and the clay doesn't need sealed.

I sealed the quarry walls with a coat of paint. Then Modge Pod, then a second coat of paint. Then filled in some spots with white glue, more paint and sprinkled in a little dirt for texture.

Just don't feel like doing that to 100 little blocks balanced up on a toothpick for painting...

Is the Modge-Podge thing similar to Acrylic Matt Medium?  How about the spackling compound mentioned recently?

Yeah it says the Modge Podge is a sealer, just had it so I used it. The internet says you can use water mixed with glue in place of it. After they dry I will start painting.

So now I wonder    Will the foam out-gas and bubble my quarry like it does if you use foam as a water base?

Probably not - the sealer you are using is water-based so there should not be any bad reactions with the foam.

Yes, but in another layout where I used foam as a base for water. And then used gloss medium for the water. I got a bunch of small bubbles a few months later. Dave Frary says you cannot  use foam as a base for water because it keeps out gasing.

That is why all the waterways on this layout have a wood base.

Just wonder if the quarry will bubble as well.

Foam blocks are working. I got them painted and washed with ink. There are still some small holes, but each block really only needs one good side so I'll be OK.

Now the fascia... no I don't think I'll be blending it in  Do you think it needs it?



Think I need to work on those backdrops next, yikes!

I think if it were me, I'd blend it in.  But, if you decide to merely paint the fascia and call it a day, I don't think that will be objectionable.

Very nice Chris - you did succumb to the peer pressure and it worked out.   

Since we are critiquing, I think that pile of rock chips would not look like it does in your model - the steep slope is too linear.  I think it would look more realistic if it gently flair out at the base to a much larger footprint.  Unless of course your 1:1 photographic evidence shows it just like you modeled it.

This would be an easy fix - just add more chips on the bottom and blend them into the existing pile.

Yeah it is just a base shaped out of foam and coated with small rock. Not done yet. Looks like it started out as stone dust from teh saws:


And then turned into the trash pile:


I will pile clutter more up.
