Do you know how he made the barrels? Are they turned? It seems like it would be a fairly simple turning, aside from the pivots. Were those added later?

The barrel was turned as one piece and then Dad cheated by drilling a hole through the center and pressing a separate piece for trunions. It's not like he couldn't have made it one piece but seeing what it was to be used for, it made sense to simplify the creation of it.

More publications are afoot!

Trackside Model Railroading came by last week to shoot stills and video for their online magazine and DVD series.
And it's official; the Kalmbach Model Railroad Planning Annual for 2024 will feature an article on my layout!

Here's my latest magazine appearance. They came out to shoot stills and video not long ago.
It's not much if you REALLY want to see it.

Just got my On30 Annual with my operations article, from which I can now introduce my wife as a "published model railroad photographer"!
FYI, I'm the one on the left. I'm told I look short in photos but I'm a few feet behind Robert (I'm 6 feet tall)...

I was just down in 'Tweetsie' country last week.  Apart from an intersection of "Old Tweetsie Road" off of 105, a bit of visible grading along 105 through Foscoe, and the flat spot in Boone where the depot was, there's precious little evidence that a rail line existed.

I've never been able to put my hands (or eyes) on a map that overlays the ETWNC over the current landscape.
I believe it went through to Johnson City, TN, but was there also a branch up to Mountain City?  West Jefferson?  Where did it connect to the outside world?

(Sorry if you've covered this elsewhere)

The ET&WNC connected at Johnson City, ran through Elizabethton, across the Doe River several times toward Cranberry, NC where it ended. Before the massive flood of 1940 in went to Boone.
There was a branch to Pineola but didn't go to the other places you named.
There have been some maps done over the years to show then and now.

I recently got the digital proof for my article for the Kalmbach 2024 Model Railroad Planning Annual from none other than Tony Koester, complete with MR-produced track plan. That was surreal to me to see that as I never thought I'd see my own layout in one of their trackplans.
I assume it'll be out in December or January. That'll really be special for me, as I think most in the hobby know how hard it is to get into any Model Railroader publication.

Congratulations on being published. I have mostly been a lurker over the years but I’ve followed along as you’ve developed your layout over the years, it’s cool to see you up in the big leagues!

That's great news, Lee! Congratulations on the attention your layout has garnered. It's well deserved. And I'll echo the "thank you" for sharing on TRW.  :)

Lee,

Congratulations on yet another publication!  Model Railroader magazine is the pinnacle to me, so I understand what you mean by this one being special.  Granted mine was only an ad for Trains.com, but there is a picture of my work in the print magazine.  That was a big check mark on the bucket list.  I will never forget the day that @Philip H texted a picture of that MR page to me.  I had no idea that was going to occur.

Curious, what kind of lights are those?
The links you posted are the type of lights they use but I don't know the brand and model. They were an LED panel arrangement.
I watched them at work and whatever it was, they could not only match one another, but the interior lights in my room as well.
